Your ChatGPT conversations aren't as private as you think.
I discovered this last week when I realized OpenAI was using my chats to train their AI models. Turns out, 90% of users have no idea this is happening or how to control it.
Here's what most people don't know about ChatGPT privacy settings:
First, OpenAI saves every conversation by default. They can use these chats to improve their models unless you specifically opt out.
Second, your chat history syncs across all devices. Convenient, but also means your data lives on their servers indefinitely.
Third, you can actually turn this off. Here's how:
• Go to Settings in your ChatGPT account
• Click Data Controls
• Toggle off "Chat History & Training"
• Choose "Don't save" for future conversations
When you disable this, OpenAI won't store your chats or use them for training. Your conversations become temporary and get deleted after 30 days.
You can also download all your data or delete your entire chat history from the same menu.
The catch? You lose chat history across devices and can't search old conversations. But for sensitive topics, this trade-off makes sense.
I switched this setting for my main account after learning how much personal information I'd shared over months of casual conversations.
Your data, your choice. But you need to know the choice exists.
Have you checked your ChatGPT privacy settings yet?
