Last week, we posted Teams That Perform Part I. It was about leaders finding the right variable mix of Time, Energy, People & Communication to maximize results.

This week's blog is about applying leadership virtues to successfully lead people through (sometimes turbulent) change.

Last week, we posted Teams That Perform Part I. It was about leaders finding the right variable mix of Time, Energy, People & Communication to maximize results. Then things changed. Covid hit and is still being managed differently around the country. Throw in massive civil unrest and a

When a team does not perform, it is usually the coach that is held accountable. What do successful coaches do to drive to successful team performance? What are the factors that distinguish teams that perform well from those that don’t?

There is reason for some guarded optimism as we exit the Covid-19 situation and re-open the American economy for business.

So the question is: how do we best adjust our on-boarding practices to the new realities when bringing current staff back to work and hiring new employees?

There is reason for some guarded optimism as we exit the Covid-19 situation and re-open the American economy for business. PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC)  conducted a survey in May 2020 with 288 Chief Financial Officers and Finance leaders in public and private companies. The result of

As a white male, I’m reluctant to offer a lot of personal commentary in this post but would argue that a lack of empathy for the lives and life experience of others has been a significant contributor to where we are as a nation this week. Likewise, I believe that we’re not going to emerge from this ongoing tragedy without intentional deep work on empathy and the application of it. That’s not just up to our political leaders; that’s up to all of us.

Empathy starts, I think, with listening without judgment and with the intent to learn deeply about the lives of others. The next step is to allow what we’ve learned to connect with our own hearts and minds. Leaders in all walks of life can practice this personally and create space for the people in their organizations and communities to do the same.

Empathy is a building block of positive change. As we process the past week, here are three stories that have challenged me to deepen my own sense of empathy.

The Guns & Roses song, Patience, pops to mind right now. You and your team will be overwhelmed at some point this year. This is a lot of change and we will all react to it differently and at different times. I am finding it harder to concentrate at times. I also find myself getting annoyed with the actions of others much more quickly than usual. We have all lost some sense of control due to all the changes happening and we are looking to you as our leader to make sense of things. Thus, you will have to have patience for people being a bit more frustrated, not sure of what action to take and maybe a lack of focus. This will also require you to tap into your empathy and find ways to connect at a deeper level.

I can’t remember a time of more change in my lifetime (I was born in 1968 so did not see the 1960’s.) We have a global pandemic, massive economic crisis and protests across the country around racial inequality. We have had to figure out how to home school our kids, get our employees to work from...

How often do leaders get bogged down with minutiae when the people around them just need someone to simply pay attention to what is going on in their world?

The Tale of “The Under-Cabinet Light Fixture” We needed to replace some under-cabinet light fixtures in the kitchen. And given our recent circumstances with COVID, we had some time to do this project. While I am not a super handyman, doing the replacement looked pretty straightforward. Having re...
