That happened to hundreds of NFL๐Ÿˆ players this week.

For months they trained, competed, studied the playbook, and fought for a spot.
Then somebody had to make the call.

Not because every player released was bad.
Because there are only so many roster spots.

And I kept thinking about how often leaders avoid making that same decision.
We add another meeting. Another initiative. Another responsibility. Another โ€œpriority.โ€

But almost nothing ever comes off the roster.

Eventually the problem isnโ€™t effort.
Itโ€™s capacity.

Sometimes leadership isnโ€™t deciding what else your team should do.
Itโ€™s having the courage to decide what they should stop doing.

Thatโ€™s what Iโ€™m digging into in this weekโ€™s 3 ๐˜—๐˜ฐ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ ๐˜๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ฅ๐˜ข๐˜บ:

Before Q4 gets moving, ask yourself one question:

Great leaders donโ€™t just decide what matters. Theyโ€™re willing to decide what no longer does. The question heading into Q4 isnโ€™t only โ€œWhat should we add?โ€ It may be: What are we still carrying because nobody has been willing to make the cut?

Youโ€™re probably not waiting for more information.
Youโ€™re waiting to feel certain.
That feeling may never come.

๐Ÿ€ Referees donโ€™t get unlimited time.
We see the play.
We process it.
We make the call.

Leadership should work the same way.

3 things to practice:

1๏ธโƒฃ Know when you have enough information.
2๏ธโƒฃ Put a clock on the decision.
3๏ธโƒฃ Make more small calls so the big ones get easier.

You donโ€™t need certainty.
You need the courage to ๐— ๐—ฎ๐—ธ๐—ฒ ๐—ง๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—–๐—ฎ๐—น๐—น.

I missed the call.
No excuse.

There was contact on the drive, and I didnโ€™t blow the whistle.
Seconds later, the same player crossed the line with his behavior.

Technical foul.

And thatโ€™s where leadership gets interesting.
Because after you make one bad decision, thereโ€™s a temptation to let it influence the next one.

You hesitate.
You overcorrect.

You make the leadership version of a makeup call.
That usually turns one mistake into two.

The better response?

Own the miss.
Learn from it.

Then make the next decision based on whatโ€™s happening right now.
Thatโ€™s the lesson behind this weekโ€™s 3 Pointer Friday:

๐Ÿ€ Donโ€™t Let One Bad Call Become Two

Because leadership isnโ€™t about getting every call right.
Itโ€™s about having the confidence to make the **next right call.**

โœŒ๏ธTwo seconds.
Thatโ€™s often all a referee gets to decide:

Foul or contact.
Stop the play or let it go.

Leaders face the same decision all day.

The email hits.
The employee walks in.
The problem lands on your desk.

Do you handle it now?
Delegate it?
Or let it wait?

The biggest mistake is not always making the wrong call.

Itโ€™s hesitating so long that the moment makes the call for you.

This weekโ€™s 3 Pointer Friday is about recognizing what needs you, ignoring what does not, and moving the play forward.

What decision have you been avoiding?

You donโ€™t have a vacation problem.๐Ÿ๏ธ
You have a โ€œthey still need meโ€ problem.

I was away with my family this week, and it hit me:

The real test of leadership is not what happens when youโ€™re in the room.
Itโ€™s what happens when youโ€™re not. If the team pauses, panics, or waits for you to rescue every decisionโ€ฆ

Thatโ€™s not loyalty, thatโ€™s dependency.
And dependency will burn out the leader and weaken the team.

Real leadership is building people who can think, decide, communicate, and move the mission forward without you standing over them.

That doesnโ€™t happen by accident. It happens when you build systems, create clarity, and stop taking back every responsibility you claim to delegate.

This weekโ€™s "3-Pointer Friday" is about what stepping away reveals about your leadership. Link HERE: https://3pointcareconsulting.com/post/if-you-cant-step-away-youre-not-leading-a-team-yet

When youโ€™re gone, does your team execute, pause, or panic?

๐ŸŽ†When I was a kid, the fireworks were all I watched.

Now, I find myself watching something else.

I watch families spread out blankets. Kids cover their ears. Neighbors who haven't talked all year laugh together while they wait for the first launch.

Then it hit me...

Nobody leaves talking about one firework.

They remember the entire show.

The best teams work the same way.

One person can make an impact. But the organizations people never forget are built by people who trust each other, know their role, and create something bigger than themselves.

That's this week's 3 Pointer Friday:

"One Firework Is Beautiful. A Team Is Unforgettable."

If you lead a team, I think this one will resonate.

Happy Independence Day and Happy 250th Birthday, America. ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐ŸŽ†

โšฝThey lost 3-2 on Thursday. They're still advancing.

Most leaders would read that as a contradiction. As a referee, I read it as the whole point.

The U.S. men's team lost to Tรผrkiye yesterday, but they'd already clinched the knockout round two games earlier. The loss stung. It changed nothing.

I see executives panic over one rough quarter all the time. One bad number and the instinct is to tear up a plan that was actually working. But a single result almost never tells you whether you're on track. A bad night and a bad direction are not the same thing.

The teams that go far aren't the ones who never lose. They're the ones built deep enough to survive a loss and composed enough to keep moving when it comes.

Before your next big reaction, ask one question: is this a trend, or is this a Tuesday?

What's one "loss" your team took recently that didn't actually change your direction?

Almost nobody noticed that 2 completely different holidays fall on the same Sunday this year and they're quietly asking you to do the same thing.

This Sunday is Father's Day. It's also The Longest Day, when the Alzheimer's community honors the families and caregivers carrying a weight that never gets lighter.

One happens at home. The other in the communities many of you lead. The assignment underneath both is identical: be present for the people who count on you.

As a referee, I can't officiate the possession in front of me while worrying about the next one. The moment my attention leaves the floor, my performance follows it.

Leadership is the same. So is being a dad. This weekend, pick one floor at a time. When you're home, be home.

Same job. Different floor.

Send this to a dad who needs to hear it, or a caregiver who needs to feel seen.

I broke the whole idea down in this week's 3-Pointer Friday.

Father's Day or The Longest Day: which floor is harder for you to stay present on?

AI is going to fix your staffing problem. It won't touch your real one.

Give it a year or two. The scheduling, the open-shift scramble, the compliance paperwork, software is going to chip away at all of it, and that's good news.

But here's what AI is never going to do: develop your next director, or notice when your best supervisor is quietly drowning and one bad month from walking out the door.
That's your real shortage.

So I'll give you the exercise I run with operators: pick your five most important seats and write one name next to each: who could step in for 30 days if this person left tomorrow? The silence on two or three of those seats is usually the real finding.

AI can read the data. It can't read the room.

That part's still on you.

Most people have never heard of the NBA Finals White Jacket.

Only a handful of officials earn the opportunity to wear one each year.

From the outside, it looks like a reward.

But the people who wear it know the truth: The jacket isn't the reward, it's the responsibility. The higher you rise, the more people watch. The more trust you're given, the more accountable you become.

And your success is no longer measured by what you accomplish...
It's measured by who you help develop.

That's the lesson this week's ๐Ÿ€3 Pointer Friday is all about.
Because great leaders don't chase recognition.

They earn it and then use it to elevate others.
