In the summer of 1865, company founder, Daniel Mathias Bare, along with John Eby and John Morrison, began construction of a paper mill in Sprang’s Mill, Pennsylvania. Later that same year, a boiler explosion and subsequent fire left the mill in ruins. The rebuild was completed and paper production resumed in 1867. A year later, the town name changed from Spang’s Mill to Roaring Spring. These humbl
e beginnings are the foundation for the industry that was to become Roaring Spring Blank Book. By mid-1887, the first product under the company’s new name was completed. In September of that same year, a fire from an adjoining business spread to the mill and destroyed the rebuilt plant and machinery. Not to be discouraged, a new, two-story brick structure was erected in 1888 and paper production recommenced. In 1900, to keep up with its expanding business, a new three-story structure of native limestone was built to support Roaring Spring Blank Book Company and its continued growth. Roaring Spring Blank Book continues to thrive in the paper industry:
• In 1964, Spring Cove Container began operations.
• In 1987, the paper company celebrated its 100th anniversary.
• In 1990, the company began transferring production to a larger plant in Martinsburg, PA.
• In 1991, opportunities expanded again thanks to entry into the college bookstore market.
• Acknowledgment by the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) for being of historical significance
• In 1993, induction into the Blair County Business Hall of Fame.
• In 2002, received the Alexander Notopoulos Award, recognizing the company as one of the outstanding industrial firms in Blair County. In 2022, Roaring Spring Paper Products celebrates its 135th year in business and we are still going strong!
