You may have heard on the news of two totally unrelated shootings which occurred yesterday. One was within a gated community in Sarasota, FL where there were several deceased victims, but no motive has yet been determined. The crime scene is still evolving, but several of the characteristics of this shooting are similar to those of the other incident.
The second shooting actually occurred in northeast British Columbia which resulted in eight fatalities with dozens of injuries. The shooter in this particular incident is deceased from a self inflicted gunshot, but not before first fatally shooting two relatives within a home before moving to a secondary school and continuing his shooting spree.
Both of these shootings occurred, at least initially, within residences, which is fairly uncommon. However, it does indicate the possibility of domestic conflict in each case as wel as the distinct possibility of mental illness playing a role.
What’s fairly uncommon is the incident which occurred in Canada, a nation with much stricter gun laws than the United States. Statistically, there is a growing trend of violence, not just with fi****ms, but with other tools of violence. This indicates that the availability of fi****ms is not necessarily the cause of these incidents, which contradicts what is being reported by the main stream media.
In our Active Shooter presentation, we examine not only the general rise in level of violence, but also how the main stream media contributes to that increase in violence.
It can’t be stressed enough that training in active shooter response is becoming more critical than ever, and these latest incidents emphasize that point. You can’t wait until you’re actually involved in an incident. Proactive training which focuses on behavioral characteristics, cause and effect, and also mitigation play a vital role in preparation.
