Check it out!

We’ve had the pleasure of assisting The Villages, Inc. of Kansas in northwest Topeka manage natural resources over the last 5 years. Our recent efforts helped kickstart a revitalization of their Sugar Works Adventure Park.

A series of obstacle challenges, ropes, and wooden structures now breathes easier after 13 acres of invasive Bush Honeysuckle was removed with mechanical mulching equipment.

It’s exciting to work with partners that set the bar high and work towards common goals.

Our Topeka Branch led the most recent efforts. Way to go Luke Berning and Marshall Gibson!

Busy as Beavers, again!

We spent 4 days the last few weeks installing Beaver Dam Analogs for the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation near Mayetta. This was a partnership with Ducks Unlimited, KAWS Kansas Alliance for Wetlands and Streams, and the PBPN.

A total of 14 separate structures were installed in the channel to slow water, catch sediment, create micro-habitats, or divert the flow to a braided flow. Each site was unique and required a different thought process.

On the last day, we participated in a hands-on demonstration where 15 natural resource professionals watched the build process take place. A few even jumped in and helped out!!!

The Art of Distraction

A recent day project took me to Mills County, Iowa to hand plant several hundred shrubs and 100 trees with about 32 tree shelters. About 5 miles out from the site, the evil plant, Bush Honeysuckle, started to catch my attention zipping down the road at 65 mph. Wishing, I would drive out of it didn’t happen upon arriving at the landowner's property. In fact, it was probably more established than the plants I had passed on the way up. These were the “mack daddy" Bush Honeysuckle sized plants, that almost require a notch cut to fell.

The purpose of planting more trees and shrubs to care for was overshadowed by the overwhelming need to remove the evil w**d from a nice stand of mature Bur Oak. The picture doesn’t lie with a .3-acre field encircled with extremely mature Honeysuckle.

This might be the same feeling a cattleman has when releasing cows into a pasture full of Hedge, Locust and Cedar. Or a row crop farmer using a planter not set at the proper depth. Steps were being skipped to get to the top.

At times through the years, fulfilling a particular task for a landowner has made for a long drive home wondering what will happen in the future. While this landowner was required to plant seedlings per a govt contract, it didn’t seem like the biggest need on this farm.

Doniphan County, KS- scouting a new project had me eager to see a particular part of this farm. Prior projects have been around this farm but never on it.

It’s so special to see remnant prairie on ridge-tops in the Loess Hills. It’s likely more remnant prairie is on this farm, but woody cover has taken over.

There’s not much of these exposed grasslands on the ridge tops let in the immediate area. Either the plow or the brush has won the battle. What was plowed is gone forever. Where trees currently grow, there’s still hope. Do you ever think we’ll look back on history and wish we left more of this nearly extinct ecosystem intact?

The Sunday Moment- The Vine

We come across many different vines in our work travels. A Riverbank Grape Vine can allow for a “Tarzan” type swing in the woods. Virginia Creeper can be confused for Poison Ivy. Japanese Hops seems to reach out and grab your shoes.

What about vines that can hurt. Multiflora Rose resembles a barbless fish hook. Bristly Greenbrier (pictured) feels lovely when it rips across the back of your legs or along your neck.

What did the good Lord say about vines?

John 15 5

Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.
