Hunting Blind Giveaway, with a twist!

We’re giving away a 6’x 6’ blind that is set-up for rifle, bow, or crossbow to one young lucky winner. No stand, only the blind is being given away but a wooden homemade stand can be built by the winner or placed on the ground or on a trailer. Ideally, the winner will be new to hunting or just getting started.

Rules:
1. Applicants must be between the ages of 8-16 years old.
2. Parent involvement in the application is encouraged but the youth should lead the development of the application.
3. Applicants must reside in Brown or Doniphan County, Kansas.
4. The blind must be used in Brown or Doniphan County, Kansas.
5. Applications are due August 31, 2026 and submitted to [email protected]

Material to include in the application:

1. Youth’s name, age, address, parents name, and phone number.
2. What species do you plan to hunt or would you like to start hunting.
3. Where will the blind will be placed.
4. Describe a memorable hunting experience or what you hope to enjoy once you begin to hunt. Include a hunting picture.
5. What does good wildlife habitat for deer, turkey, quail, songbirds, etc. look like in your opinion.
6. Why is it important to have permanent native cover on the landscape.
7. Who do you enjoy hunting with or who do you plan to hunt with if new to the sport.

All applications will be accepted and reviewed and then a winner will be announced. The blind will be delivered shortly after the winner is announced.

It’s important to keep our hunting heritage alive and well along with understanding that game thrives where good cover exists.

Old barn, new life

Our Headquarters got a huge upgrade over the last 9 months. It’s now a place to work out of better, be more organized, and of course relieve oneself. The room includes a toilet, 200 amp fuse box, a heater, new wiring, tub sink, new cabinets, on demand hot water heater, a washer and dryer, and a commercial ice machine.

Huge thank you to Stonebarger Electric from Highland, Gavin Doser with Elite Spray Foam LLC, Max Gillen, and my good buddy Jared Rauch from Forbes.

Also, there’s a lot that can be learned from hands on experience and a patient teacher early in life. Thank you to my dad for teaching many of the skills required to take on this project.

Big Blue will be rolling again sooner than we know it.

Please reach out to coordinate cover crops or wheat drilling in eastern Brown County and Doniphan County. Last Fall had some wet stretches and it pushed our limits of achieving what’s possible while still having a life. This year, we’re only drilling a certain amount of acres and 1/4 of those acres is already locked in. So don’t wait around until the last minute, it only adds more stress on everyone. Let’s get all the details fleshed out before it’s go time.

Lions, tigers, and bamboo- oh my!

I haven’t come across a lion or tiger yet in Doniphan County, but Bamboo was found recently. A small plant was most likely dumped or planted some years ago which started this mess.

Bamboo primarily spreads through rhizomes underground similar to how Johnson Grass can multiply quickly in an area and then be a challenge to eradicate.

Not sure about you, but I would always pick a native Bur Oak over a non-native invasive plant. The phase of “death by a thousand cuts” applies to how invasive plants are taking a toll across the landscape.

No one told me starting this business that good ones are going to be lost along the way. It’s been a sharp reality that customers pass on before the work is done.

Since 2018, we’ve had the opportunity to work with Ray Becker and his son Tim drilling waterways, planting wheat and CRP, burning, and spraying pastures. Ray was always a true gentleman and treated us like family. He routinely would say “bid it right, Luke.” Meaning to make it as good as possible no matter what the task was.

Ray dedicated his career to his country, his family, and to being a steward. Rest easy, Ray.

The invasive non-native Autumn Olive doesn’t get anymore dense and mature than found in pockets of this project. It’s quickly moving into the grasslands along with a host of other woody plants.

Luckily, the Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever in Nebraska bids out habitat projects on an annual basis in conjunction with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. These projects leverage funds and make mission critical improvements on the land.
