80’s kids and older are familiar with this slogan.

Now let’s apply that to woodland health, regeneration, and goal potential. The left side of this photo is a recently mulched area. Everything that is now saw dust was invasive Bush Honeysuckle. The right side of the photo is a spot that hasn’t been mulched yet. Consider Bush Honeysuckle a drug that limits potential in the short and long term, decreases reproduction, and cuts life short for desirable species.

Don’t let the woodland drug of Bush Honeysuckle ruin your woodlands.

We’ve gone nuts!

Some might be thinking, I’ve known that for a while.

For the last 5 years, we’ve assisted the Kansas Forest Service in adapting planting techniques of large seed. Primarily white and red acorns, hickory, and pecan have been planted. This technique is called Direct Seeding and is used to establish trees in high density stands. On average, 6,000-10,000 seeds per acre are planted. About 1/3 of the seed germinates, 1/3 doesn’t germinate, and 1/3 is predated by animals.

Results have been impressive thus far and using this practices helps quickly capture a site and puts a lot of roots in the ground.

The last bit of streambank stabilization work along the Big Blue River wrapped up yesterday. In total, we worked on 3 separate sites on the Big Blue and Little Blue Rivers. These projects have immediate and long-term positive impacts on the adjacent fields, to the Tuttle Creek Watershed, and to all Kansans’.

In total, 1,876 fast growing tree seedlings were planted, 7.2 acres of native grass and temporary seed was put in the ground, and a whopping 25,096 willow poles were installed.

Our partners in crime are the good men and “River Whispers” at Jueneman Excavation,Inc from Hanover.

The always hard working and skilled crew of Blake Nichols, Zakary Jacobo, C**t Forney, and Jossie Shumaker made all the planting happen.

Success

How does one measure this sought after goal?

In our line of work, success comes in many forms. It’s rewarding to see measurable change through property improvements such as less than desirable trees being cleared, invasive plants reduced, grass stands being improved, and huge changes in wildlife populations. The rat race of work always reminds me to not forget the starting point, easier said than done.

A 300 acre mixed use farm we’ve been working on the last 5 years has taken quite the transformation. Posting pics can be challenging to visually show progress at times, so luckily there’s scientific data. The landowners are dire-hard quail hunters and sustaining and improving covey numbers was the original goal from the get go.

Just by chance, the local District Wildlife Biologist with Kansas Department of Wildlife & Parks conducts a quail whistle count at the corner of this property multiple times a year.

While this is a huge “success” in my book, being content is far from top of mind. Can we double or triple these numbers? Time will tell, success has been achieved but it’s no time to take our foot off the gas all while appreciating where we started.

Check it out!

We’ve had the pleasure of assisting The Villages, Inc. of Kansas in northwest Topeka manage natural resources over the last 5 years. Our recent efforts helped kickstart a revitalization of their Sugar Works Adventure Park.

A series of obstacle challenges, ropes, and wooden structures now breathes easier after 13 acres of invasive Bush Honeysuckle was removed with mechanical mulching equipment.

It’s exciting to work with partners that set the bar high and work towards common goals.

Our Topeka Branch led the most recent efforts. Way to go Luke Berning and Marshall Gibson!

Busy as Beavers, again!

We spent 4 days the last few weeks installing Beaver Dam Analogs for the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation near Mayetta. This was a partnership with Ducks Unlimited, KAWS Kansas Alliance for Wetlands and Streams, and the PBPN.

A total of 14 separate structures were installed in the channel to slow water, catch sediment, create micro-habitats, or divert the flow to a braided flow. Each site was unique and required a different thought process.

On the last day, we participated in a hands-on demonstration where 15 natural resource professionals watched the build process take place. A few even jumped in and helped out!!!
