Everybody has something they've been putting off.

A small task. An unfinished responsibility. Something that keeps getting pushed to tomorrow.

The longer you avoid it, the easier it becomes to keep avoiding it.

As a dad who loves racing, I’ve been thinking about what it really takes for a young rider to make it to the professional level in flat track.

I’d love nothing more than to see Jackson accomplish that dream. But as his dad, I also want to be honest with him about what it takes and how difficult that road really is.

I believe hard work can take you a long way, but the reality is that not everyone who gives it their all will make it pro.

I want Jackson to dream big, but also understand the commitment, sacrifices, and setbacks that come with chasing that dream. And if one day he decides racing is something he just wants to do for fun, I’m 100% okay with that. I’ll be just as proud.

My job isn’t to make him a professional racer. It’s to give him the opportunity, support his dreams, and let him decide how far he wants to take it.

I’m curious how other racing parents handle this. Do you focus on encouraging the dream, or do you also have conversations about the reality of making it?

I don’t think there’s a wrong answer. Just something I’ve been thinking about as a racing dad.

Jackson has a new challenge: it's his first season indoors; he's in the senior class, and he hasn't practiced on a short, tight track. Although the results were not what we wanted, he is excited to go back. Flat track racing, never give up 😎
