A spin through history and a breath of fresh lake air! 🎠✨

Our client spent a wonderful afternoon at Lake Ontario Beach Park in Rochester, soaking in the sights along Lake Ontario with their care partner. The highlight of the day was visiting the historic Dentzel Carousel—listening to the organ music and admiring the century-old hand-carved animals.

If your loved one with dementia becomes more confused or agitated in the late afternoon, you're not imagining it. It's called sundowning, and it's one of the most challenging parts of dementia care.

A few things that genuinely help:
Get morning light exposure early in the day, schedule harder tasks like bathing and appointments in the morning, keep late afternoons calm, quiet, and familiar, stick to a consistent evening routine, and avoid caffeine after noon.

Sundowning is manageable with the right consistency and support. You don't have to figure it out alone. 💙

Today is National Senior Citizen Day. And in honor of this important day, we are proud to celebrate another wonderful client, Toddy! 🐴❤️

Toddy’s story is a beautiful celebration of family, resilience, tradition, and the deep roots that carry us through life.

🐴 Deep Roots & A Heritage of Horses
Growing up as an only child after her father left when she was very young, Toddy and her mother moved in with her grandparents. Her mother held a lifelong passion for horses, which meant Toddy grew up riding, caring for, and loving horses from an early age.
After saving up, Toddy’s mother bought a small, beautiful farm filled with oak trees on Marsh Road in Pittsford—a place that was truly perfect for the two of them. As their passion grew, her mother decided to expand to a larger farm. They named it Oak Ridge Stables, and while there isn't a single oak tree on the new property, the name stands as a proud tribute to the original farm that gave Toddy and her mother their independence and a fresh start. Today, Toddy still owns and resides on this very farm!

📞 Party Lines & Teatime Laughs
Toddy fondly remembers the days of "party line" telephones when chatting long distance meant talking to a friend just one town over!
She shared a funny memory of chatting with a friend as a teenager and realizing a nosey neighbor was eavesdropping on the line. Being a little spicy, young Toddy said a few choice words about the neighbor—a moment she admits wasn't her finest, but one we both had a great laugh sharing together!

🌾 Returning Home for Family
Eventually, Toddy married, and her husband’s career took their family to Ohio and later California. But when her daughters were 3 and 8 years old, an opportunity arose to move back home to Rochester.
They moved right back onto Oak Ridge Stables, where they raised their family and their horses. Today, family remains the absolute center of Toddy’s life. As a loving widow, mother of 2 daughters, and proud grandmother of 4, Toddy thrives on her daily routine and spending time with the people who mean the most to her.

We loved kicking off the celebration for National Senior Citizens Day early yesterday at Refresh Smoothie Bar! 🥤✨

One of the sweetest moments was getting a surprise visit from a past client and her daughter, who stopped by just to say hello. Even though she has moved on from our services, knowing the lasting impact Touching Hearts made on their family means the absolute world to us.

Seeing her happy, healthy, and truly thriving was the best reminder of why we do what we do.
