Here is a clock that I will be posting about. It's going to take several weeks to know if I get it fixed or not. When you wind the clock the strike goes off which then makes it an hour off every time you wind it.

If you have been following me you know I just picked up a van load of clock parts. This is one of the movements with the parts.

Well it is all back together and running perfectly. Notice the lever on the top left hand side, where the little hole was is were the nut was wired on to make it work. It now works perfectly with out any extra weight. If you want your clock to work perfectly bring it to Behind The Times Clocks and have it repaired the correct way.

Putting the movement back together can be the hardest part of clock repair. You have to have every gear and lever in the proper place not to mention having the gears in the right orientation to the levers. If you don't and one turns just a little putting the plates back the strike will go off and not stop until it is wound down or it just won't work at all. Trying to get the two plates back together and have every gear and lever line up with the holes in the plates can be a challenge too.
You may notice the clamps on the springs. Removing springs can be very dangerous so you have to wind the clock and the slide the clamp in place then let the spring down so the clamp holds it from flying out. Then disassemble the movement and take the spring to the spring winder machine and wind it back up and remove the clamp then let it down slowly so the spring is totally wound down for cleaning.

Here is a picture of all the old solder removed and cleaned up and the second picture shows the new bronze bushings installed. I use bronze bushings when ever possible because they are harder then brass and will last a lot longer.

This is what you don't what to see when you pull the movement out of a clock. Someone who did not know how to work on clocks solder strips of brass to hold the pinion from moving instead of disassembling the movement and replacing the bushing. This is a armature repair and not the correct way to do it plus, it looks really bad. These pictures are after I cleaned it. Before it looked like the movement was dunked in motor oil. With a clock movement you do not want any oil on the brass gears except for the escape wheel which gets a light oiling. Look at the lifting lever also, instead of finding out why it was not working correctly they wired a nut to it for extra weight. It is things like this you do not see when buying a clock. That is why I suggest buying from a reputable clock shop. I will post after pictures when I'm finished with the repair.
