As much as we all hate orange barrels, we ask you be patient and take it slow through our work zones. The Teamsters are making our city beautiful, please respect that. Thank you!
PUBLIC WORKS PROJECT UPDATES: Construction season is underway, and we’ve got several projects moving forward across the city.
11th Street Project (Harrison Ave to Broadway St)
Work continues on the 11th Street reconstruction project with daily lane closures in place between Harrison and 22nd Avenue for grading, sidewalk work, and lighting installation. The section of 11th Street from 21st Avenue to 15th Avenue remains closed as crews prepare for the new roadway, while storm sewer work between Columbia Avenue and 18th Avenue is scheduled to begin May 7. Drivers are encouraged to follow posted detour routes, and pedestrians should note that temporary signage is in place near Collins Aerospace while new crosswalk signals are installed.
Davis Park
Davis Park remains closed as construction continues on this major improvement project. Work is on track for completion this summer.
Auburn Street (Central Avenue to Main Street)
Work continues on the Auburn Street project from Central Avenue to Main Street. Daily Lane closures will be set up between Central Avenue and Main Street to work on new watermain installation, and storm sewer upgrades in the east bound outside lane. This work will continue through Friday, May 29. Motorist should expect delays during construction and are encouraged to take alternate routes.
Mason Avenue (IL-251 frontage road to east dead end)
This project consists of the reconstruction of Mason Avenue. Improvements will include new drainage swale, storm sewer, driveway approaches, and a full reconstructed roadway. Work began this week with equipment mobilization, vegetation removal, and construction layout. Removal of pavement surfaces and primary construction task will begin the week of May 11, 2026. Completion of this project is scheduled for June 30, 2026.
Hydrant Flushing
Unidirectional Flushing for the 2026 season continues throughout areas bounded by Sandy Hollow Road to the north, the City limits to the south, South Mulford Road to the east, and the Rock River to the west. During the week of May 10 through May 16, crews are scheduled to flush water mains along Boeing Drive, Assembly Drive, Logistics Parkway, Bluffside Drive, Samuelson Road, Ashwindale Lane, Falcon Road, 42nd Avenue, and Lincliff Drive. The flushing program is an important part of maintaining water quality and improving the overall performance of the City’s water system. Residents in the affected areas may notice temporary discoloration or pressure changes during flushing activities.
Street Sweeping
The City of Rockford Street Division continues residential street sweeping operations, while Central Business District sweeping will continue every other week throughout the summer. During the week of May 4, crews are scheduled to sweep neighborhoods east of North Mulford Road to the City limits between Spring Creek/Perry Creek Parkway and Riverside Boulevard, as well as areas between East State Street and Spring Creek/Perry Creek Parkway. Residents are reminded to keep garbage cans out of the street and to avoid parking in areas scheduled for sweeping, as crews will not make additional passes around obstacles.
