The first round of voting in the Makers Madness competition is now open!

More than 100 unique products from every corner of the state were nominated for this year’s contest, with nominees ranging from agriculture and energy storage equipment to life-saving medical products, iconic pantry staples, sweet treats, and a variety of vehicles.

Voting throughout the contest will take place at www.makersmadnessil.com, where voters can now choose which products will advance to the Top 16 bracket round.

Voting is open now and runs through 11:59 p.m. on March 22; participants can vote up to five times per day. Check out our 2026 nominees and vote daily to help us determine The Coolest Thing Made in Illinois!

One of the most interesting eras of the Arter name started today in 1958, when Sundstrand purchased the Arter line and integrated the machines into their existing lines.

Eventually, the Arter name was dropped from the machines, with the company sticking to naming them Sundstrand grinders. Once the Arter line was purchased by CMI in 1980, the Arter name was established.

On this date in Arter history:

Centro-Metalcut, Inc. purchased the Arter Precision Grinder line from Sundstrand, beginning a 20-year ownership of the line.

During those years, many Model H grinders were produced by CMI and the Arter name was restored onto the machine after years of it being known as a Sundstrand grinder.
