Let's face it, summer is here but don't neglect your yard. Watering twice a day and insect control is most important.

Pull weeds or spot spray with Herbicidal Non-Selective Soap.

Feed camellias and other acid-loving plants.

Mulch. Mulch. Mulch.

Cut spent berry canes to the ground. Tie up and fertilize new canes. Fertilize roses and remove spent flowers from day lilies, roses, iris and other bloomers. Watch for caterpillars on vegetables and flowers like geraniums. Fertilize vegetables.

Schedule your Gutter Cleaning: The National Weather Service is projecting a strong El Niño condition through this winter and into early spring so get your gutters cleaned soon. Gutters are designed to draw water away from a home's foundation. When a gutter overflows with debris, it may cause roof damage and damage to your gutter system. If irrigation is reduced to the point of the grass turning brown, it can go dormant and if properly cared for, will come back when it begins raining. It’s important to care for dormant grass by watering regularly according to your water district’s requirements. Other watering tips include:

• Watering early in the morning or late at night allows the grass to absorb more water and increase its life span.

• Spring is one of the best seasons to feed your lawn, and prevent damage during the hot summer months.

• Pull weeds in and around the lawn as they can absorb the water needed to keep your grass healthy.

If you’re not sure if your grass is dormant or dead, do a tug test by grabbing a handful of grass and pulling. If the grass comes out easily without much force, it may be dead. If it takes a little momentum to pull the grass out, it is dormant.

Dead grass cannot “come back,” but you can replace it through seeding. Rake the area to loosen up the soil and eliminate the dead grass, and seed the area to help a new patch grow. This process has the best results in the fall, with natural rainfall so that the seeds can stay saturated until signs of growth are detected.

If your lawn has died, it may be a great time to replace it with drought tolerant landscaping with bark, rocks or gravel. See www.ecolandscape.org for ideas.

NOTE: Even though brown grass is permissible according to County Zoning Codes, you still need to keep it trimmed and mowed during the drought season.

Save Gallons of Water
Use an automatic shut-off nozzle on your hoses; install a drip irrigation system; add mulch around plants; repair water leaks and avoid overspray/runoff; water landscaping in early morning or late at night; and plant drought tolerant landscaping.

Put a layer of mulch around trees and plants to reduce evaporation and keep the soil cool. Organic mulch also improves the soil and prevents weeds. Save: 20-30 gallons/each time you water/1,000 sq. ft. Call for an estimate 916.532.9966

We can safely say, by the temperatures we’ve been experiencing, that we are in our dry season. Here are some important water conservation tips: use short sprinkler watering intervals instead of fewer and longer watering times; water when it’s the coolest (10p-10a); and direct sprinklers and their reach to where vegetation is and avoid spraying the hardscape.

Caught between the drought and high temperatures. I strongly urge people to continue watering as recommended: 1 time per day, 6 days a week, 7-10 minutes per station. Preferably at 5 a.m. in May. Otherwise, your lawn is going to struggle while the weeds takeover. Foreclosure homes are the perfect example of what happens to an under/unwatered lawn.

Water Conservation Tips:
1) Turn off the water when shaving and brushing teeth
2) Use a bucket to catch the water while the shower is on and water is warming up. The bucket water can be used to water plants or even flush your toilet
3) 5 minute showers
4) Use a commercial car wash where they recycle the water
5) Shower at night when the pipes are hot so it takes less time for the water to heat up

Another storm is coming. Get your gutters cleaned. Clogged gutters can cause damaged to your roof as the weight of accumulated water and debris pulls the gutter away from the house. The water will also cause the gutters to rust so keep them clean. Call 916-532-9966 for gutter cleaning services.
