The past week has been incredibly snakey, with a ton of nighttime snake encounters and a notable bump in pairs or trios of snakes.

Late in the summer/early (meteorological) fall, right as baby snake season really gets going, is a secondary mating season. This is why there has been a big surge of sightings of males in combat over the past couple weeks. In a lot of those cases, the males are fighting over a nearby female.

Outside of this behavior, the warm evenings as of late have been excellent for nocturnal snake activity. Around half of the snakes I've removed in the past week have been after sunset, a trend that will likely continue into the coming week as weather conditions remain fairly steady.

Lots of garage snakes and night calls as of late, a trend that will continue/escalate as hot weather continues through much of next week.

Hot temperatures limit daytime snake activity, as temperatures in the 90s and 100s can proven fatal to snakes caught in the open or in insufficient cover. Instead, snakes will take care of most of their travel/errands in the early morning, evening, and overnight hours during periods of hot weather.

Some recent snakey business ranging in locale from the sierra foothills to the Napa valley foothills.

Starting to see more and more nocturnal snake activity as daytime highs become dangerously hot for snakes. A common misconception about snakes is that they like heat, but generally when temperatures climb above about 85 - 90, direct sunlight can become dangerous for snakes caught out in the open. Generally, if the air temperature feels comfortable to you, it probably is for snakes as well.

Once temperatures climb over 90 - 100 degrees, most snakes will come out to run their errands early in the morning or in the evening/overnight hours. When snakes are nocturnal, they tend to be somewhat less cover-driven, more willing to venture out in the open more if it gets them from point A to point B faster without having to worry about the hot sun cooking them.

In addition to usual rattlesnake shenanigans, it's primetime gopher snake season right now as well. Lots of cases of accidental misidentification in the past couple of weeks between gopher snakes and rattlesnakes.

Speaking of gopher snakes, an interesting case in Rocklin last weekend was a callout for one gopher snake in a backyard that ended up being 3 adult gopher snakes. It's mating season for snakes currently, so I'm sure you can connect the dots there.

The whacky spring weather whiplash is expected to continue this weekend into next week, which should continue to result in interesting snake activity.

Tired of photos of snakes, but like graphs? Here's some data from the past few years showing how temperature factors into people encountering rattlesnakes (and subsequently getting removed). It helps visualize the temperature range where people and rattlesnakes most intersect.
