Today, on what would have been my father’s birthday, I honor the life and legacy of Winston Valentine Davis Sr., a visionary, a hustler, and a pioneer in the world of recycling and entrepreneurship. His story is one of resilience, innovation, and Black excellence.
Born in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1946, he came to America with a dream and turned scrap into success, revolutionizing the recycling industry. With sheer grit and intelligence, he built the largest junkyard empire in NYC, proving that wealth and legacy could be forged through hard work and strategic vision.
But success didn’t come easy. His rise in the industry challenged systemic barriers, making him a target of those who couldn’t stand to see a Black man excel. Despite facing unjust legal battles and government opposition, he fought to keep his business alive, paving the way for future generations of Black entrepreneurs.
His impact goes beyond business. He provided jobs and opportunities for the community, showing young Black men that ownership, not just labor, was the key to generational wealth. His legacy inspired me to continue his work through Scrap-It Junk Removal, making sure that his vision for sustainability and economic empowerment lives on.
As we celebrate Black History Month, let’s remember that Black entrepreneurship is Black history. My father’s story is proof that we can build, we can thrive, and we can leave a lasting impact.
✨ Happy Birthday, Dad. Your legacy lives on. 🖤
