Happy International Mezcal Day! This year, our lab provided Sanger sequencing services to help better understand the fungal and bacterial landscape of agave.

Researchers sampled fermentations in two years and across three agave species in the same distillery. Psomagen provided Sanger sequencing services for yeast species present in this study.

The results of this project show that non-Saccharomyces yeasts were the dominant species across all fermentations, and lactic acid bacteria and acetic acid bacteria. The microbial community varied more between years of fermentation than between species used in the fermentation process. In each fermentation, the mix of microbial genera remained consistent; the major changes were in the dominant species.

For Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we’re highlighting new research that combines circulating and spatial proteomics to better understand liver metastatic breast cancer.

Using Olink™ Target 96 Inflammation and Target 96 Immuno-Oncology panels, researchers identified circulating proteins associated with patient outcomes.

Researchers used both circulating proteomics (Olink™) and spatial proteomics (GeoMx™) analyses to identify biomarkers in patients with liver metastases from breast cancer, which are typically associated with a poor prognosis due to aggressive disease features. Elevated levels of circulating CD8A, CX3CL1, and FGF-21 were associated with poor prognosis, whereas high plasma MMP1 was associated with prolonged survival. Spatial proteomics revealed compartment-specific outcomes, and combining data from the two technologies uncovered epithelial fibronectin as a potential biomarker that merits further investigation.
