Earlier this week on May 19, we saw yet another tragic incident unfold in San Diego, California where two gunmen attempted to storm an Islamic center. They were met by armed security officer, Amin Abdullah (pictured here), who immediately engaged the two gunmen in a firefight and was simultaneously able to activate the facility's lockdown protocol, which bought time for the 140+ children and others inside to secure themselves.

Amin was fatally wounded in the gun battle. The two gunmen went on to commit su***de after taking the lives of two other staff, who had lured them outside into the parking lot.

If not for Amin and the other two staff members involved, the level of hate these two gunmen had for those inside could have led to a catastrophic loss of life.

Whether you are working as an armed or unarmed security officer, you must ALWAYS TRAIN as if your LIFE DEPENDS ON IT.

KNOW your facility's lockdown procedures
KNOW how to evacuate others from your building
TRAIN your first aid skills regularly
ENGAGE others in this preparedness mindset
ALWAYS read your post orders
NEVER assume something bad can never happen at your workplace

Security work is NEVER an "easy job". It requires dedication, professionalism, and the mindset that IF this happens here, YOU will be prepared and will act swiftly.

NEVER STOP TRAINING!

A very unfortunate reminder that security work can be dangerous. Every week in class we mention the fact that security officers can be killed while on duty. Always remember, complacency kills. Just because something doesn't happen this week, or next month, or next year, does not mean nothing bad can ever happen. STAY VIGILANT!

Dadrian Freeman, 21, and his father, 46-year-old Dedrian Freeman, face charges, Fort Worth police said.

This is something we've been talking about lately in our CT Guard Card classes. Ask yourselves, why do you choose to work in the security industry? Is it for an easy job/easy paycheck? Or is it truly to help people and keep people safe?

This website below should be mandatory for all security professionals to review regularly. It tracks security officer line of duty deaths across the U.S. These aren't "just people." They could be your fellow colleagues, someone you know, or even you.

The protective services industry can be dangerous and it is up to everyone to ALWAYS stay vigilant no matter how quiet the day gets. Put the cell phone down, keep your head on a swivel and stay vigilant.

Although we have a full time news and research department that tracks security and private police officer injuries and deaths, the total number of deaths is unknown due to a lack of accurate agency reporting, media omitting names, and misclassification of job titles.
