This propeller is going to a museum for static display. It is going to be so pretty 😍

This is a rough cut to get the bulk of material off. I will follow up with a second cut that will take the flat spot out of the airfoil.

A comment I see a lot is, “You should just have a sandpaper wheel that goes after the saw blade.”

In theory that sounds like a good idea, but as anyone who has ever done any sanding knows……….one pass of sandpaper does nothing lol. Sanding it by hand is also where all the fine tuning happens. I think having a sandpaper wheel would also dull and round my edges. The trailing edge especially needs to come to a nice edge so the airflow from the top and the bottom of the prop comes together nicely.

So if this was a episode of Myth Busters….I would call this idea BUSTED.

“Why don’t you use a dado blade?” “You should be using a dado blade.” “A dado blade would cut faster.”

Well my little motor can’t pull it!

“Get a bigger motor.”

Well I could, but this machine cuts faster than I can sand. I also like the motto “don’t fix what isn’t broke”.

I promise you guys, we are doing just fine. The lathe is doing its job beautifully, I am doing my job to the best of my abilities, and it seems to be working. 🥰

At Oshkosh this year, I got to meet John Moody. He is the Grandfather of Ultralights. I got to make him a prop a few years ago.

In 1975 he put a chainsaw engine on a Icarus II hang glider and the rest is history. He said “I never ment to invent anything.” Well, he did invent something and that new category of aviation is what kept my Grandpa flying after his heart attack and lead my Grandpa and my Dad to buying Culver Props. 🥰
