When people ask what drives my competitive nature, I often point to my years in competitive soccer. But the real spark wasn't some external rival; it was always my older brother.
He was just over a year older than me, but he always felt a mile ahead. I genuinely looked up to him in every way.
That difference created a permanent competitive tension. It wasn't hostile; it was pure motivation. If he was running those two miles in under 12 minutes, I was going to be right on his heels. If he was mastering a new skill, I had to master it too. I was driven not just by an internal desire to succeed, but by an external, deeply personal need to
That feeling, the striving, the constant measure of myself against a high, trusted standard never left. It transitioned from the soccer field to the restaurant business, and finally into the world of IT. When I took on the three months of studying for my CMMC certification, that same competitive drive kicked in. I set a high personal standard and refused to fall short.
