This snow cover is a perfect time to start burn (not bun 😂) piles that have brush from way back last summer stacked in them. Low winds makes it the opportune time!

Part of farm life is getting attached to this or that animal and then eventually you have to let them go. We had to do that today here at MBF. Bertha was a midget white turkey we got for Peyton about 8 years ago. Peyton was 5 back then.

Bertha survived and defended off a hawk attack several years ago. She literally looked like she’d been in a street fight. We prepared for her death. But it wasn’t to be. She fully recovered and lived another 4-5 years!

Over the last several months we’ve been noticing Bertha was slowing down. But she was still the boss. The grandmother of them all. No one messed with her. She was just a constant, always there. Minding her business but keeping things in order.

Tonight Peyton and I went out to close up the chickens and put out fresh water for tomorrow morning. There was Bertha. Eyes closed, gone. Out in her favorite spot, the outdoors. It’s the way she would have wanted to go. Not in the coop.

She was the absolute best!

We’re pretty sure there will be another midget white. Soon. It just seems right.

Fly high Bertha!

All of the old h**p shavings and droppings are loaded into a bucket on the tractor then spread over the garden for the upcoming season planting. It will be tilled in over the next few days. Allowed to sit in the rain, then covered with w**d barrier to get ready for planting.

Since we exclusively use non GMO feed for our flock, there's no worry about nasty antibiotics in the fertilizer we use!

We exclusively use h**p bedding in our hen house. It's far better than straw or cedar shavings. It lasts much longer and absorbs the droppings and odor better than anything else. And it's 100% biodegradable. Perfect for the garden!

We've been busy on the farm lately. With warmer weather beginning to pop up here and there it's been time to clean out the chicken coop. (It's one of the very few times I am a stickler about using a high grade mask. You can get some pretty nasty lung infections from the dusty f***l matter in a chicken coop)

We use that to fertilize our garden that will be planted in the coming weeks.

We till it all in and let nature take care of the rest!
