New research suggests omega-3 supplementation may support autonomic nervous system function in individuals with overweight or obesity. In a recent meta-analysis, omega-3s were associated with improvements in heart rate variability (HRV) and reductions in resting heart rate. Researchers observed significant improvements across multiple HRV measures, including a clinically meaningful increase in SDNN.

Key Call Outs
• Improved multiple heart rate variability (HRV) measures
• Reduced resting heart rate
• SDNN increased by an average of 26.13 ms
• Significant benefits observed in individuals with overweight or obesity
• Findings support a positive shift in autonomic nervous system balance

Wellness Unfiltered Pro - Building Better Foundations: A Practical Guide to Multivitamin Selection

Multivitamins are often viewed as the foundation of a nutritional protocol, yet nutrient needs can vary significantly based on age, gender, physiology, health status, and clinical goals. In this episode, we explore the Biotics Research multivitamin suite and discuss how different formulations are designed to support distinct patient profiles. Through a practical, application-focused conversation, we challenge the search for the "best" multivitamin and instead provide a framework for selecting the most appropriate option for the individual being supported. The result is a more personalized approach to foundational nutrition and patient care.

Emerging research suggests that genetic differences may affect how individuals respond to omega-3 supplementation. In a recent study, fish oil supplementation significantly increased EPA, DHA, and omega-3 index levels in just 4 weeks. Researchers also found that a specific genetic variant influenced the magnitude of these changes.

Key Call Outs
• Omega-3 index increased from 3.14% to 4.69%
• EPA and DHA levels significantly increased after supplementation
• Variations in the ELOVL2 gene influenced omega-3 response
• Carriers of the A allele achieved higher omega-3 levels than those with the GG genotype
• Genetic differences may impact omega-3 requirements and supplementation needs

These findings highlight the potential value of omega-3 biomarkers and personalized nutrition strategies when evaluating individual responses to supplementation.

New research published in Nature Communications highlights how oats may improve heart health through interactions with the gut microbiome. Key findings from the randomized controlled trial in people with metabolic syndrome:

• Short-term high-dose oat intake reduced LDL (“bad”) cholesterol by 10%
• Total cholesterol decreased by 8%
• Oat consumption significantly increased DHFA, a beneficial microbial metabolite linked to cholesterol regulation
• Researchers identified increases in gut bacteria associated with healthy aging
• A short-term intensive oat regimen appeared more effective than a longer-term moderate intake approach

The findings suggest the cholesterol-lowering effects of oats may be driven in part by gut microbial metabolism.

New research published in The Journal of Fetal-Maternal & Neonatal Medicine analyzed 50 clinical trials involving nearly 60,000 women to identify interventions that may help reduce the risk of gestational hypertension and pre-eclampsia.

Key findings:
• Calcium + aspirin reduced risk by ~88%
• Exercise lowered risk by 61%
• Calcium alone reduced risk by 45%
• Aspirin alone reduced risk by 32%

Additional emerging evidence also supports the potential role of:
• Vitamin D
• Omega-3 fatty acids
• Magnesium
• L-arginine

Pre-eclampsia remains one of the leading causes of maternal and fetal complications worldwide, making prevention strategies and nutritional support increasingly important topics in maternal health.

The research highlights the importance of a comprehensive approach that may include movement, targeted supplementation, and individualized nutrient assessment during pregnancy.

A network meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials using a variety of interventions to help with gestational hypertension was published in The Journal of Fetal-Maternal & Neonatal Medicine. Gestational hypertension, defined as hypertension that begins after 20 weeks into pregnancy (without prot...

New research continues to highlight the impact of carbohydrate reduction on blood sugar control and metabolic health. A real-world clinical audit published in Nutrients found that reducing carbohydrate intake — combined with coaching, community support, and lifestyle education — helped a significant number of patients reverse type 2 diabetes and normalize blood sugar levels over time.

Even moderate carb reduction (

Evidence continues to mount that dietary carbohydrate restriction can be beneficial for improving blood sugar control, including reversing type 2 diabetes (T2D) and prediabetes. A study published late last year in the journal Nutrients showed that a low-carb diet led to reversal of T2D and normaliza...

Speaker Topic: Why Thyroid Treatment Fails: A Root-Cause Approach to Refractory Thyroid Symptoms

Thyroid disease is frequently managed through laboratory-driven algorithms, yet clinical experience often reveals significant discordance between lab markers, symptom burden, and therapeutic response. This presentation reframes the thyroid not as the villian, but as the victim, highlighting thyroid dysfunction as a downstream manifestation of broader physiologic processes. This session employs a clinically grounded, case-based approach to examine common yet underrecognized drivers of persistent thyroid symptoms, including impaired hormone conversion, receptor resistance, inflammatory burden, iron deficiency, stress physiology, and s*x hormone interactions. We need to move beyond the limitations of isolated, thyroid-centric assessment and the necessity of interpreting laboratory data within the context of whole-system health.

05/15/2026

Recent studies continue to show strong links between ultra-processed food consumption and negative health outcomes across all age groups. Research from the American Journal of Medicine found that adults with the highest intake of ultra-processed foods had a 47% greater risk of cardiovascular disease, including heart attack and stroke, compared to those with the lowest intake. Additional studies also linked higher ultra-processed food intake to impaired cognitive function in older adults and increased behavioral and emotional problems in children.

Key Call Outs
* Higher ultra-processed food intake linked to a 47% increased cardiovascular disease risk
* Associated with greater risk of heart attack, stroke, and cardiovascular mortality
* Older adults showed poorer executive functioning with higher intake
* Children consuming more ultra-processed foods had higher anxiety, depression, aggression, and hyperactivity scores
* Ultra-processed foods made up a significant portion of calories in both adults and children studied
