A construction site's risk profile on day 30 is not the same as its risk profile on day 300.

Early in the project, there may be equipment, fuel, temporary fencing, and open access points.

Later, the building starts filling up with copper, appliances, fixtures, tools, and finished materials.

The target changes.
The access points change.
The workforce changes.
The hours change.

So why would the security plan stay exactly the same?

One of the advantages of working closely with a project team is being able to adjust coverage as the site evolves.

Move the unit.

Property managers know that small problems rarely stay small.

The "Broken Windows Theory" suggests that visible signs of disorder (abandoned vehicles, graffiti, illegal dumping, vandalism, or neglected areas) can signal that no one is paying attention. And when that happens, bigger problems often follow.

One of our retail clients was experiencing increasing criminal activity and illegal dumping. Beyond the direct costs, it was beginning to affect tenant confidence and the overall perception of the property.

Last week, Safe Choice monitoring agents received alerts for vehicles remaining in the parking lot for more than 24 hours. During a site visit, we confirmed multiple vehicles were violating posted parking restrictions, including one sitting on jack stands.

We took action.

Two vehicles were towed. Three others were tagged with warnings. By Saturday morning, every offending vehicle was gone.

Because of the consulting side of our business, we work with a number of security vendors. That gives us a firsthand look at how differently companies approach monitoring.

This week, I spoke with a company offering camera monitoring services. Their monitoring is outsourced to a third party that follows client-established protocols.

I asked how many cameras each operator monitors. She couldn't tell me. But she made one thing very clear: they would not call law enforcement unless someone from our team approved it first.

Why? They didn't want the liability of making the wrong decision.

Today, we deployed an MSU for a large homebuilder. The superintendent told us his current provider sometimes calls him up to 30 times a night when they see something suspicious, asking what he wants them to do.

That's where Safe Choice is different.

Last week, we received another call from a client regarding unhoused individuals occupying areas around a vacant retail center and creating ongoing concerns for nearby tenants. When I walked the property on Friday, I found the situation was more extensive than originally reported.

With the support of the Davis, California Police Department, we were able to address the situation, clean up the property, and deploy an MSU to help keep the area safe, secure, and maintained going forward.

One of our core values at Safe Choice is simple:

Never stop improving.

We're not a static security company. Every incident teaches us something, and every lesson makes our clients better protected.

Last week, one of the properties we protect experienced an arson fire. Our cameras captured it, but we realized something important. We weren't generating AI alerts specifically for fires.

That changed immediately.

We updated our monitoring protocols across every property we protect.

The very next night, our system alerted our Security Operations Center to someone attempting to start a fire at a different site.

Another lesson we're tackling right now involves unauthorized "car meet" events at retail centers. We've successfully used our systems to help shut these gatherings down once they begin, but our goal is to stop them before they ever happen.

This week, our Security Operations Center is launching a proactive intelligence initiative designed to identify these events before they arrive at properties we protect.

That's how we think about security.

Most people think our AI watches for thieves after hours.

I wish someone would invent a formula for 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗳𝘁.

Not just the value of the stolen tools or materials.

I'm talking about everything that comes after.

* The superintendent who spends half the morning on the phone instead of running the project.
* The project manager scrambling to reorder equipment.
* The crew standing around waiting because the tools they need are gone.
* The conversations that start with, *"Did you hear what happened?"* and somehow turn into every theft story anyone has ever experienced. (All while on the clock 😀)
* The schedule that slips.
* The subcontractor who can't do their work.
* The owner asking why the project is behind.

None of those costs show up on the police report.

None of them get reimbursed by insurance.

Yet they're often far more expensive than what was actually stolen.

If I had that formula, every estimator could plug in the numbers before bidding a project and know exactly how much security was worth.

Instead, it's usually a gamble.

"Let's see if we can get by without it."

Sometimes you win that bet.

Last week, I got another familiar call.

"Rick... we had a theft last night. We need some help."

Like we always do, we had a security plan in place that afternoon.

I just wish more companies called 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 they had all the numbers for my imaginary formula.
