Medium voltage termination is one of the most unforgiving tasks in the electrical trade. Get it right and the system runs reliably for decades. Get it wrong and the consequences can be catastrophic.
Here is what most people outside the trade don't fully appreciate about MV terminations:
Voltage stress doesn't stop at the conductor. Where the insulation ends, electrical stress concentrates. That concentration is why a proper stress cone or engineered stress control device is non-negotiable. Without it, partial discharge begins quietly degrading the insulation until the system fails, often without warning.
Cleanliness is everything. Any contamination, moisture, or irregular cut in the insulation shield creates a path for failure. We are talking micron-level precision on materials carrying thousands of volts.
The right materials for the voltage class matter. A termination designed for 5kV does not belong on a 15kV or 25kV system. Matching the termination kit to the exact cable construction and voltage rating is a step that cannot be skipped or substituted.
Proper dielectric testing after installation is the final checkpoint. A termination that looks correct can still have voids or improper interfaces that will fail under load. Testing confirms the work before the system is energized.
At Tri C Electric, our team is trained and experienced in medium voltage work across commercial and industrial applications. We treat every MV termination with the discipline it demands because the stakes are too high for shortcuts.
If your facility has aging medium voltage infrastructure or upcoming MV work, let's talk.
