We dug up some 4” tile today that we installed back in 1975 — some of the very first plastic tile installed in southwest Minnesota.

Gary Ling, being the sharp guy he was, knew that if you wanted round tile to actually stay round, the bottom of the trench couldn’t be flat. Nobody made a V-shaped boot at the time… so he just built his own.

Safe to say it worked — nearly 50 years later that plastic tile came out of the ground looking like it was installed this morning. Goes to show that properly installed tile, at an optimal depth can last generations! Pretty neat to see!

It’s been a smooth fall so far, and we’re grateful for it. Projects have been moving along steady, the weather’s been on our side. We’ve had the chance to work with a lot of great folks these past few weeks.

Finished up this job over the weekend, and it sure looks great!

Fall tiling is well underway. Dry soil is making for some difficult working conditions, but as we saw this spring, that can change quickly. 🌧️

📍 Heron Lake, MN

In 1976 this field was patterned tiled with some of the first plastic tile at 100’ spacing, and two lift stations were installed. At that time, this system was on the cutting edge of water management.

Fast forward to 2023 and 100’ spacing wasn’t quite getting the job done. We located every line on the existing tile drainage system and tiled between each of the each lines, creating a 50’ pattern system across this field. The land owner also opted for a new lift station pump and holding reservoir that we installed this week.

The first tile on this farm has lasted almost 50 years, and we want to make sure this farm is good to go for another 50!
