A dementia diagnosis can leave a family with so many questions, and some of the most important ones are legal questions that need to be addressed early.

Jeff Barnett of Barnett & Leuty has been practicing estate and elder law for more than 30 years, and he is someone we have trusted and referred families to for years.

In this clip from the Rock Solid Rock Business Leaders podcast, Jeff talks with host and co-owner of A Place At Home - North Austin, Bryan Eisenberg about what families should think about when a loved one receives a dementia diagnosis.

The folder they hand you at discharge has a follow-up date, a medication list, and “activity as tolerated.” What it doesn’t have is a plan for the six days a week nobody’s watching.

That’s the gap where recovery actually falls apart. Not during the physical therapy visit. In the hours after it, when a dose gets missed, a fall happens, or someone just stops going anywhere because getting to the car feels like too much.

CMS data backs this up: roughly 1 in 5 Medicare patients gets readmitted within 30 days of discharge, and most of those cases trace back to exactly this kind of gap.

How do you know when a parent’s decline has crossed from “having a hard year” into something that needs real support? Most families guess. Stacey built something better.

It’s called the PASE, the Family Guided Aging Evaluation. It scores four areas of a parent’s life: physical health, cognitive and emotional wellbeing, social engagement, and daily living and independence. Five questions each, scored 1 to 10, with a total that tells you where things stand.

The detail most people miss: a single low section score is a red flag on its own, even if the overall total looks fine. That’s exactly the kind of thing that gets buried in an average and shows up later as a fall or a missed medication.

Stacey’s latest article walks through how it works and how to use it, done every 6 months to a year, as a trend line instead of a one-time snapshot.

Pay attention to the tasks your parent quietly stops doing.

One gentleman our caregivers worked with had started asking his wife to help him put on his socks every morning. Not because he couldn’t dress himself. Because bending that far had become too hard, and he never said so out loud.

A flexible sock aid gave that back to him. It wasn’t about the socks. It was about starting the day on his own terms.
