Yin-yang in Feng Shui ~ Yin-yang represents a dynamic balance of opposing but complementary and interconnected forces, known as chi.

Chi refers energy. Chi is an energy current, a "life force," that passes through the inside and outside of the body, and also through physical objects too.

When your chi is strong, it courses through you and fills you with life and health.

While "qid" refers to the actual act of restoring balance, "chi" is the physical force and energy that flows through us.

Feng Shui in a Nutshell ~The Chinese words "feng" and "shui" translate to mean “wind” and “water," respectively. This concept evolved from an ancient poem that talks about human life being connected and flowing with the environment around it.

What Is Feng Shui?

~ The art form of feng shui is a practice of arranging the pieces in living spaces in order to create balance with the natural world. The goal is to harness energy forces and establish harmony between an individual and their environment.

The Color White ~ What does white mean in the world of feng shui?

In feng shui, every color is considered to have a different energy (Qi / Chi) vibration. Color can be used any space as a great way to rebalance and harmonize the energy of your surroundings so that it positively supports you and your lifestyle.

White is a powerful ‘Yang’ color and is great energy reviver. In the home, the color white is a very helpful feng shui cure and can be used for troubleshooting in small, dark and dingy areas of the house where stagnant energy accumulates.

The bright and reflective qualities of white means it can lift the heavy energy of darker spaces. For north-facing rooms or those with little natural light, white walls, fabrics and accessorises can maximise the potential of incoming light to reinvigorate the energy of these areas.

In smaller spaces, where the energy flow may be overly constrained or suppressed, the color white will bring a greater sense of airiness and freedom of movement. A brilliant white ceiling will immediately lift the energy in any small room.

The reviving qualities of white can also help support you and your life goals. White signifies starting over, new beginnings and unbridled creativity. In feng shui, white is thought to ‘create space’ for positive energy to enter your life – this could mean more money, supportive people or fresh opportunities or insights.

So, if you are embarking on a new chapter in your life, beginning a new project, or just needing to stimulate some out-of-the-box thinking, introducing the colour white into the spaces where you spend time focusing on these matters will help create the perfect setting for the positive to manifest. If you are able to combine white décor with a decluttering of these spaces this will also amplify the impact. This is just like starting afresh with a blank sheet of paper!

White in feng shui is also associated with the qualities of confidence and authority. White says: ‘look at me I have nothing to hide’! This is why white can be great to use in both your environment and in your clothes when you want to assert a sense of power underpinned by white’s other qualities of purity, honesty and integrity. So this is why white can be a helpful colour choice in meeting rooms, rooms for entertaining new friends or clients, or as a clothes choice when you want to look your best for an important job interview or presentation.

Purple in Feng Shui ~ Purple is most often associated with abundance and dignity in feng shui. However, it can also act as a calming or even spiritual agent.

It's the culmination of blue and red, so it has the strong presence of red while some of the more soothing aspects of blue shine through.

Purple is a great shade to try and dot your spaces with, and lighter shades can be used to represent romance in the bedroom.

Purple in the Bedroom ~ Because it's made up of red (a fire color) and blue (representing water), purple straddles the line between soothing and uplifting energy. A soft lavender with more blue than red can work in a nursery or bedroom, while plummy hues are better reserved for more active spaces.

Bed Placement Against a Window ~ The many hours you lay in bed contribute to how much of your energy is absorbed into this piece of furniture. This is why the bed placement is one of the first things to consider when adjusting your home’s feng shui.

An important consideration is to put your bed with the head against a solid wall, rather than under a window. There are a few reasons for this.

Sofa Placement~ No matter the function of the space, no living room is complete without a sofa—and, as it turns out, sofa placement can have a big impact. "As with any room you are applying feng shui to, it's best to establish a 'commanding position,'" designer, Cerrano, explains. "

In short, this means the occupants sitting on the couch in the living room have a clear vantage point of who is entering at all times."

Red in the Bedroom in Feng Shui ~ a little something a bit personal now: It’s wonderful, just go for it!

My husband Dennis and I just purchased this piece of art for our bedroom, specifically with a touch of red, to bring in pizzazz, a bit of boldness, and daring. We know the color red inspires feelings of passion, so we thought we’d make the switch to just a hint of red to infuse our rather woody, earthy bedroom with more passion.

Our bedspread is a white cotton for contrast, and I’ll be adding a red throw the color of this Lady‘s shroud to pull the color over into the center of our room at the foot of our bed. Can‘t wait to see how it all pulls together!

Embrace Color in Small Bites ~ Although designer Cerrano advises embracing color, she also cautions against using too much of it. "You don't need to paint your entire room one of these colors," she explains.

You'll still reap all the benefits of a hue if you incorporate it into your space sparingly.

“You could have a neutral wall color (creme or beige) and accent your room with noticeably warm colors through light sources, artwork, an area rug, or accent pillows," she suggests.
