Why OVVE Does Not Prepare Tax Returns, And What We Do Instead for Nonprofits
As we approach the 2026 tax season, many nonprofits begin planning for their Form 990 filings. One of the most common questions we hear at OVVE Accounting Solutions is:
“Do you file 990s for nonprofits?”
The short answer is: OVVE does not prepare tax returns or Form 990 filings.
But the long answer is much more important, and it says a lot about the quality, clarity, and integrity of the services we do provide.
Why OVVE does not take on tax preparation and how this approach ensure nonprofits receive the most accurate, compliant, and high-quality support possible.
1. Because Tax Preparation Requires a Different Specialty
2. Because Quality Matters More Than Saying “Yes”

Last week, OVVE Accounting Solutions had the honor of participating in the 20th Annual Nonprofit Management Conference organized by Troy Chamber of Commerce, an inspiring gathering of leaders, innovators, and change makers committed to strengthening Southeast Michigan’s nonprofit ecosystem.
As part of our commitment to supporting organizations with clarity, confidence, and sustainable financial practices, OVVE proudly sponsored the session “Diversifying Revenue Streams,” presented by Molly MacDonald, Co-Founder & CEO of the Pink Fund.
Molly’s insights on resilience, creativity, and building mission-aligned revenue were both energizing and practical, reminding us that financial sustainability is not just about numbers but about strengthening impact.
Throughout the conference, we connected with incredible nonprofit professionals who are working every day to serve their communities. From conversations about internal controls and budgeting to discussions about grant readiness and financial storytelling, the day reinforced why OVVE exists: to empower nonprofits with the tools, structure, and support they need to thrive.
We are grateful to the Troy Chamber of Commerce for hosting such a meaningful event and to Molly MacDonald for sharing her expertise and story with honesty and inspiration.
To all the nonprofits we met, thank you for the work you do.

Our Volunteers Handle It — We Do Not Need Systems

The Heart of Every Nonprofit: Volunteers
Volunteers are the lifeblood of so many nonprofits. They show up out of love for the mission, bringing energy, time, and compassion to everything they touch.
But even the most dedicated volunteer cannot replace the need for structure.
When it comes to finances, relying solely on volunteers without clear systems can create gaps that put your organization’s long-term health at risk. It’s about continuity and compliance.
The Hidden Risk of “We’ll Figure It Out”
Many nonprofits begin informally: a friend tracks donations, a board member manages QuickBooks, and receipts pile up in an email inbox. For a while, it works.

We Are Too Small to Need an Accountant: Why Financial Clarity Matters at Every Stage

The Myth of “Too Small to Need Help”
Many nonprofit founders and directors start with passion and heart, not spreadsheets. You might think, “We’re small. We can manage this in Excel for now.”
But here’s the truth: every nonprofit, no matter the size, deserves a strong financial foundation.
It’s not about how big your budget is, it’s about how clear your financial picture is. The earlier you create systems for tracking income, expenses, and donations, the easier it becomes to grow with confidence and credibility.

Celebrating 2 Years of OVVE: Growth, Gratitude, and What’s Next

Two years ago, OVVE Accounting Solutions was born out of a simple but powerful idea, that small businesses deserve clarity, compassion, and confidence when it comes to their finances.
What started as a vision to bring simplicity and transparency to accounting has now grown into a trusted partner for service-based businesses and nonprofits across Michigan and beyond. As we celebrate our 2-year anniversary, we are reflecting on how far we have come and where we are going next.
Our Journey So Far
When OVVE launched, our goal was clear: make accounting understandable, human, and supportive. We knew that many business owners felt overwhelmed by bookkeeping, payroll, and compliance, and our mission was to change that story.
Over the past two years, we have https://ovvesolutions.com/celebrating-2-years/

The Silent Belief That Holds Nonprofits Back
In the nonprofit world, there is an unspoken rule that often shapes decisions, budgets, and even self-worth:
“Money and mission don’t mix.”
It is a belief born from the idea that caring about the cause means not caring about the cash. Many leaders internalize the notion that financial abundance somehow diminishes the purity of their mission.
But here is the truth: your mission deserves stability, not scarcity.
When you heal your relationship with money, you create the foundation for deeper impact, healthier teams, and more sustainable service.
How Financial Shame Shows Up in Nonprofits
You have likely seen it or felt it yourself. Financial shame shows up as overwork, undercharging, or constant guilt about needing more support.
Common symptoms of this unspoken tension include:
• Feeling guilty about paying staff fair wages or investing in infrastructure.
• Avoiding financial discussions because they feel “too corporate.”
• Hesitating to apply for grants or partnerships that could expand your mission.
• Underestimating your worth and undervaluing your organization’s contributions.
When money feels like a necessary evil rather than an ally, the entire organization operates from a place of survival, not strategy.
The Truth: Money Is Mission Fuel
Money is what powers your mission.

Every January Tells the Same Story
It’s January. You’re closing your books, preparing tax documents, and suddenly someone on your team asks:
“Do we need to send them a 1099?”
If you’re like many small-business owners, this moment brings a wave of confusion and sometimes panic. The 1099 rules seem simple on the surface, but the details trip people up every year.
At OVVE Accounting Solutions, we see the same avoidable mistakes each January, and we’re here to help you understand why they happen, and how to prevent them.
What Is a 1099, Really?
A 1099 form is the IRS’s form and represents how your business reports payments made to independent contractors, freelancers, or service providers who are not your employees.
The most common one small businesses issue is the 1099-NEC (Non-Employee Compensation).
What Small Businesses Often Get Wrong
1. Waiting Until January to Start Thinking About It
The biggest mistake is about timing.

A clear budget gives wings to your mission.

For many nonprofit leaders, the word budget feels like a cage, a document full of “no’s” and “not enoughs.” It can seem like budgeting stifles flexibility, limits programming, and distracts from the heart of your mission.
But what if budgeting could bring freedom?
When used correctly, a budget is about alignment, clarity, and purposeful growth.

The Reframe: Budgets Are About Empowerment
A well-crafted budget helps you make better choices. It shines light on where your resources are going and whether they align with your mission’s priorities.
When nonprofits avoid budgeting out of fear, they often face:
• Constant financial uncertainty
• Last-minute funding scrambles
• Burnout from reactive decisions
• Tension between staff and leadership over unclear priorities
By contrast, an intentional budget:
• Creates clarity as everyone knows what is funded and why
• Build trust with donors and boards
• Supports strategic growth as you can plan new initiatives with confidence
• Encourages flexibility as you can adjust intentionally

You are worth the investment.
If you work in the nonprofit world, you’ve likely felt it:
That hesitation before sending a fundraising email, submitting a sponsorship proposal, or setting program fees.
The voice that says,
“If we ask for too much, people won’t give.”
It’s a common and deeply human thought.
Nonprofits exist to serve, not to sell. And yet, this belief quietly limits your ability to fund the very mission you were created to fulfill.
Where This Belief Comes From
For many organizations, this mindset stems from a culture of humility and self-sacrifice.
You are used to “doing more with less.” You do not want to burden your donors or seem ungrateful. You worry that a higher request or increased program fee will push people away.
But here’s the truth:
When you under-ask, you underfunded your mission.
Your cause deserves sustainability.

In the nonprofit world, “access” and “affordability” are core values. Yet, as operational costs rise, funding becomes unpredictable, and inflation touches every corner of our budgets, many organizations find themselves in a painful tension:
How do we stay accessible to those we serve while ensuring our organization can survive and grow financially?
This question is not just about money. It’s about mission integrity, ethical stewardship, and long-term impact.
Let’s explore how nonprofits can navigate this balance with clarity, compassion, and confidence.
1. Reframe Pricing as a Reflection of Value, Not Limitation
Raising prices or adjusting fee structures often feels like a betrayal of your mission and it doesn’t have to be.
