I don’t like to fear-monger. And honestly, I struggle with how to deliver this message.
But I see families every day who believe government programs will be there to help care for their aging parents when they need it.
There is some truth to that—but the reality is that many families won’t qualify, and for those who do, waitlists can be years—yes, years—long.
When an urgent need arises, there often isn’t a quick solution without paying out of pocket.

So if you’re thinking:
“Mom and Dad seem okay.”
“They haven’t fallen.”
“They’re still driving.”
“They’re independent.”
That’s exactly when it’s time to start planning.

You don’t have to wait for a fall, a hospitalization, or a crisis to make changes.

Planning ahead gives you more options, more time, and more control—and can make it much more possible for your loved one to remain safely and independently at home.

Don’t wait for a crisis to start the conversation.

When I started working with this homeowner she was really struggling with safety and functionality in her bathroom (hello knees pressing into the glass wall while sitting on the toilet!). I created an accessible floor plan for her bathroom and they undertook renovations (shout out to Evan of Schleif Construction, not on Insta!)

Happy to say that she’s much safer and happier in her new accessible space!

What space in your home could you use help with?

Home and Able is taking a few days off. Dog days of summer and all that!

Here’s a sweet video of my puppy - when she lost all her baby teeth and grew in an underbite we were confused… once she learned about a raspberry and showed us her excellent picking skills, it started to make some sense why she’d have such amazing teefers!

I hope you all can have a lovely, relaxing and berry full weekend!

Two and Three years after Vermont’s devastating floods, many communities have once again faced catastrophic flooding and extreme weather. These events are becoming more frequent, reminding us that emergency preparedness is no longer optional—it’s essential.

For older adults and people with disabilities, having a personalized emergency plan can make all the difference during a disaster.

At Home and Able, we offer Emergency Preparedness consultations to help you prepare, protect your independence, and stay safer when the unexpected happens.

The best time to make a plan is before you need one. Reach out today to learn more. 💙

I love a special accessibility challenge. This particular client and I had already taken many steps to make her home accessible.

But she hadn’t been able to meet her goal of getting in and out of her beloved swimming pool (if you’re a Vermonter you know how long we wait for summer days!!).

So she hired Home and Able again and together, along with her contractor, we made the ramp of her dreams. Now she can ride her chair lift down to the basement, grab her walker, and walk right up the ramp and out the door to her in ground pool. GOAL MET.

In the meantime, I’ll just be here waiting for the pool party invite! 🏊🏼‍♀️🎉

Do you have an unique need or goal that you need help with? We’d be happy to put our heads together and make a plan! Link in bio to schedule your free consultation.

More accessibility features of our kitchen in progress…

- A step stool! A really simple add on that promotes independence for kids or shorter stature folks.

- A flexible hose and lever faucet!

- Space set up to accommodate sliding a heavy pot of water - eliminates the need to carry, reduces fall risk and overall workload for those conserving their energy.

- Front burner k***s - accessible from a seated position and means that you don’t need to reach over a hot burner to manipulate the controls.

A few posts back I boldly confessed my concern over the lack of accessibility features in our home. And while that remains true in parts of the home, we made sure to include as many accessible features into our new kitchen…

We are in the middle of a multi-phase kitchen project (hello DIY!) and there’s much more to do! So far we have included the following:
- U shaped handles for 1 handed (or 1 finger) opening!
- Easy close/open sliding drawers that eliminate the need to bend down and root around in cupboards.
- Hands free trash - an added foot pull (see previous posts with purchase info) for hands free open/close of the trash.

Stay tuned as I share more accessible updates we’ve made to our kitchen.
