Keeping my promise to continue making my own home more accessible.

It feels a little vulnerable sharing the parts of my home that aren’t exactly photoshoot-ready—but real homes aren’t perfect, and accessibility doesn’t have to be either. 😊

We’re working on making our home more visitable, safe, and easier to navigate.

Our deck already had a railing, but it wasn’t easy to grip, making it less useful for safely navigating the stairs. We added a round handrail for a much more secure grasp.

We also added a grab bar near the door, although the door swing makes its placement less than ideal. It’s getting more use when exiting than entering—and that’s okay.

A good reminder: home modifications don’t have to be perfect. They need to be secure and useful.

Tuesday! Historically my least favorite day.

But today, I’m pushing through to rush out an expedited report to a family whose loved one is going to be imminently discharged home! They need a plan and I’ve got it for them!

We are newly offering expedited reports for those who are experiencing the frustrating whiplash of getting a loved one home from a hospital or rehab.

Here we go Tuesday!

I don’t like to fear-monger. And honestly, I struggle with how to deliver this message.
But I see families every day who believe government programs will be there to help care for their aging parents when they need it.
There is some truth to that—but the reality is that many families won’t qualify, and for those who do, waitlists can be years—yes, years—long.
When an urgent need arises, there often isn’t a quick solution without paying out of pocket.

So if you’re thinking:
“Mom and Dad seem okay.”
“They haven’t fallen.”
“They’re still driving.”
“They’re independent.”
That’s exactly when it’s time to start planning.

You don’t have to wait for a fall, a hospitalization, or a crisis to make changes.

Planning ahead gives you more options, more time, and more control—and can make it much more possible for your loved one to remain safely and independently at home.

When I started working with this homeowner she was really struggling with safety and functionality in her bathroom (hello knees pressing into the glass wall while sitting on the toilet!). I created an accessible floor plan for her bathroom and they undertook renovations (shout out to Evan of Schleif Construction, not on Insta!)

Happy to say that she’s much safer and happier in her new accessible space!

Home and Able is taking a few days off. Dog days of summer and all that!

Here’s a sweet video of my puppy - when she lost all her baby teeth and grew in an underbite we were confused… once she learned about a raspberry and showed us her excellent picking skills, it started to make some sense why she’d have such amazing teefers!
