Vehicle Recovery 101 – The Basics

Vehicle recovery isn’t just about getting a stuck vehicle moving again—it’s about doing it safely, responsibly, and with the right approach. Whether assisting a stranded motorist or helping a fellow off-roader, the fundamentals matter every time:

• Safety first – Always assess the situation before acting. Consider terrain, weather, traffic, footing, and bystanders. Never rush a recovery.

• Proper equipment – Use only rated recovery gear (tow straps, soft shackles, D-rings, winches, etc.). Never use trailer balls or unrated hardware.

• A winch is NOT the end-all, be-all – A winch is a valuable tool, but it is not the solution for EVERY situation. Learn your recovery tools, understand their limitations, and know when each one should—or should not—be used.

• Correct attachment points – Always connect to designated recovery points on the vehicle. Improper attachment can cause serious damage or injury.

• Clear communication – Communication is CRITICAL. If operating as a group, there must be an open line of communication at all times— radios, phone calls, or group chats.

• Group coordination matters – Everyone on the team should know the recovery location before heading out. When traveling together, stay together. Do not leave people behind. This ensures that if someone gets separated, delayed at a light, or loses the group, they still know exactly where to go.

• Slow and controlled pulls – Smooth, steady tension is safer and more effective than aggressive or uncontrolled pulls.

• Know your limits – If a recovery exceeds your equipment, experience, or comfort level, stop and call for additional help.

Doing recovery the right way protects people, vehicles, and equipment. Knowledge, preparation, and communication are just as important as horsepower.

Stay safe out there, friends.

UPDATE: ALL CLEARED!

Anyone close to 982 & CR 392 in Princeton? Got reports that there are quite a few vehicles needing assistance. I got one team member heading that way in about an hour, but if anyone is closer that can go assess the situation. It’s End of the month & I’m stuck at my computer working at home & Scottie has to get to Farmersville to give a rider a ride to work in Greenville.

HWY 380 Jeep Recovery Team

We’re a volunteer-based group of local Jeep owners dedicated to helping our community stay safe on Highway 380 and surrounding areas—especially during winter weather and hazardous conditions. When ice, snow, or mud leave drivers stuck or stranded, we answer the call.

Our team is built on experience, proper recovery gear, and a shared belief in looking out for one another. We provide safe, responsible, and non-judgmental vehicle recoveries whenever possible—whether it’s pulling someone out of a ditch, assisting with a stuck vehicle, or helping get traffic moving again.

We are not a towing service, and we never charge for assistance within our local area. We’re neighbors helping neighbors, Jeeps helping people.

🛻 Prepared.
❄️ Weather-ready.
🤝 Community-driven.

If you see us out there, know we’re working to keep HWY 380 moving and our community safe.
