Vehicle Recovery 101 – The Basics
Vehicle recovery isn’t just about getting a stuck vehicle moving again—it’s about doing it safely, responsibly, and with the right approach. Whether assisting a stranded motorist or helping a fellow off-roader, the fundamentals matter every time:
• Safety first – Always assess the situation before acting. Consider terrain, weather, traffic, footing, and bystanders. Never rush a recovery.
• Proper equipment – Use only rated recovery gear (tow straps, soft shackles, D-rings, winches, etc.). Never use trailer balls or unrated hardware.
• A winch is NOT the end-all, be-all – A winch is a valuable tool, but it is not the solution for EVERY situation. Learn your recovery tools, understand their limitations, and know when each one should—or should not—be used.
• Correct attachment points – Always connect to designated recovery points on the vehicle. Improper attachment can cause serious damage or injury.
• Clear communication – Communication is CRITICAL. If operating as a group, there must be an open line of communication at all times— radios, phone calls, or group chats.
• Group coordination matters – Everyone on the team should know the recovery location before heading out. When traveling together, stay together. Do not leave people behind. This ensures that if someone gets separated, delayed at a light, or loses the group, they still know exactly where to go.
• Slow and controlled pulls – Smooth, steady tension is safer and more effective than aggressive or uncontrolled pulls.
• Know your limits – If a recovery exceeds your equipment, experience, or comfort level, stop and call for additional help.
Doing recovery the right way protects people, vehicles, and equipment. Knowledge, preparation, and communication are just as important as horsepower.
Stay safe out there, friends.
