Why does so much outreach today fall flat—even when you’re using the “right” tools?

If you’ve ever felt like:
• You’re doing the activity, but not seeing the results
• Your messaging isn’t landing the way it should
• Your pipeline feels inconsistent despite your effort

This conversation will resonate.

In this episode of the Business Roundtable Podcast, I sit down with Ben Baker—strategic communications leader and advisor to B2B organizations—to unpack what’s really going wrong.

The issue isn’t effort.
It’s alignment.

We get into:
• Why “spray and pray” outreach is damaging trust
• The difference between brand and marketing (and why it matters)
• How misalignment inside your business shows up in your messaging
• Why short-term thinking increases pressure instead of results
• What it actually takes to build long-term client relationships

Ben brings over 25 years of experience helping organizations when things are “bent, broken, or chaotic”—and this conversation is packed with practical insights you can apply immediately.

If you’re a business owner or leader navigating growth and feeling the pressure of doing more without getting better results, this is worth your time.

Feeling lost on how to enter environmental consulting, especially in wildlife biology? This is how a connection at the Aquarium of the Pacific opened the door, leading to guidance from a supervisor who made the niche field approachable and eye-opening.

I wanted to share a field opportunity from one of the businesses I have the privilege of supporting, Kinsinger Environmental Consulting, KEC.

Debbie Kinsinger is looking to fill an immediate seasonal position to support desert tortoise clearance surveys in the Mojave Desert, with work expected from about March 31 through May 31.

I always enjoy sharing opportunities like this because they connect good people with meaningful work, and this one could be a great fit for someone early in their environmental career or for someone who loves being in the field and wants to grow their experience.

This role involves working with a team of 3 to 7 people under the supervision of a federally authorized designated desert tortoise biologist. The work includes protocol desert tortoise surveys, hiking about 6 to 7 miles per day, with days up to 10 hours long, 6 days a week. The terrain starts fairly manageable and becomes more rugged and rocky as the season progresses.

It is a strong opportunity for an undergraduate student, recent graduate, or early-career field biologist. It is also a particularly good fit for the kind of person who already enjoys birding, herping, botanizing, or just being outdoors whenever possible. There is also potential for this experience to count toward eventual approval as a desert tortoise biologist. The position includes overtime and per diem.

To apply, send your resume and three references to [email protected].

If you have previous desert tortoise experience, please also include your federal or state desert tortoise qualifications form when you contact her.

Part of the work I love most is helping connect the right people to the right opportunities, so if someone comes to mind, please share this with them.

David Carr connected with Chris Wessling through Success Champions Network, and within minutes, Chris was sharing a story about a founder he had just spoken with.
14 years in business. Millions in revenue. Completely trapped inside it.

His dream for the next six months? Go mountain biking three times a week and maybe take a weekend off.

This is exactly why the right network matters.

David works the people side. Chris works the process side. Two sides of the same coin, and founders need both to ever truly step back from their business.

At Steward Your Business, we believe freedom for the founder does not happen by accident. It happens when the right people, the right processes, and the right relationships come together.

If you are leading a growing organization and freedom feels out of reach, let's talk.

Starting college at 15 isn’t just impressive. It reveals something deeper about discipline, environment, and how leaders are shaped early.

In this short clip from the Business Roundtable Podcast, we explore a story of grit, accelerated growth, and the hidden structures that enable high performance long before most people even recognize it.

This is not just about intelligence. It is about standards, support, and the kind of mindset that carries into leadership, business, and life.

If you are building a business or leading a team, there is a lesson here about how capability is developed and what most leaders overlook when trying to scale people.

Watch the full conversation for deeper insight into how high performers are actually built, not just identified.

This week’s Dragons Rising conversation was a great reminder:

Growth is built through relationships.

For business owners, the right introduction can unlock new opportunities.

For leaders, the right connection can create clarity and confidence.

What stood out most was simple:

People showing up ready to help each other win.

Clear conversations
Real introductions
Stronger relationships

That is what drives momentum.

I attended the February ENP forum at UCI Beall Applied Innovation and left encouraged by both the content and the people in the room.

The next event, ReINVENT 26 II: Part 2, is coming up on August 6 in Irvine.

For founders, business owners, and senior leaders in growing organizations, this looks like a valuable event, especially if you are thinking through leadership, talent, market changes, AI, operations, and how to adapt well without losing momentum.

What I appreciate about ENP is that the room creates both strong learning and strong connections.

Grateful to be returning to Cal Poly Pomona today to speak with students again.

As a Zoology graduate, it is always meaningful to come back and share how my journey has grown from biological sciences and environmental consulting into leadership development, business ownership, and helping leaders build stronger teams.

Thankful for the opportunity to encourage students to stay curious and open to where their education may lead.

Thank you, Professor Bharti Sharma, for the invitation.

Halfway through Day 2 at the Desert Tortoise Council Symposium, with a full afternoon ahead and one more day tomorrow, February 27.

What has stood out so far is the incredible range of voices at the podium.

Federal and state agency leaders.
Field biologists.
Academic researchers.
Private sector consultants.
Early career professionals.
Seasoned experts who have helped shape policy for decades.

Different perspectives. Shared mission.

The conversations are not just about species management. They are about implementation in the real world, regulatory realities, land use pressures, data gaps, and the practical challenges environmental professionals face every day.

Events like this reinforce something I see consistently in my work with environmental firms. Technical expertise is essential. So is leadership clarity.

Grateful to be learning alongside so many committed professionals. Looking forward to the rest of today and tomorrow’s sessions.

If you are here and would like to connect, let me know.
