As a veteran myself, this video hit a nerve in a profound way.
We’ve all heard “thank you for your service,” and while it’s well-meaning, it can feel like a placeholder something people say when they don’t know what else to say. And many times, I just don't know what to say or how to act and fall into the 'freeze' trigger reaction. I know it's really strange to most people but I was able to handle being spit on by war protestors better than a 'thank you for your service'. I might agree we need understanding.
Understanding the transition.
Understanding the invisible wounds.
Understanding that service didn’t end when we took off the uniform, it just changed form.
I deeply appreciate this conversation because it challenges the script and invites something more meaningful: connection, curiosity, and acknowledgment of the person, not just the title.
Let’s keep this dialogue going. Veterans don’t need pity or performative praise, we need people willing to listen, support and stand alongside us in the lives we’re building now.
Please stop thanking me for my service. Not because your intentions are bad. But because for many veterans, those five words don’t land as gratitude but like...
