From bots to automation, to in-depth engagement pods. While IG has cracked down on "inauthentic" activity on some fronts, there will always be those who use methods that are essentially falsifying metrics to rank higher in people's feeds.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I know you've seen those question replies - people who clearly didn't read it and it makes no sense. (Pro tip: you can tell they are fake because there will be no view from them on your stories 😉)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Or those comments about bitcoin or stocks or dating apps, sorry Michel456785 I don't think Forex is for me, and the more you comment the same thing, the less I think it is.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

These are all ways to get around the uncomfortable truth that social media is rather straightforward.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

When you engage with ideal clients, put out quality content, and show up in person - people take notice over time.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Most people don't want to wait or don't want to decipher what actually GOOD content is for their brand and audience.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

You can't cheat your way into a community. One that supports you + loves you, calls you out, and calls you in, and that shows you just how much your words can mean to someone.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I've been afraid to share this but it's been on my mind a lot these days.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I grew up with the mentality of "love what you do and you'll never work a day in your life."⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But...that's not true, is it?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I l-o-v-e- LOVE what I do and how I help people. I love teaching people social media, I love strategizing, I love creating content, and yet... it's still very much work.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And for a long time, I thought the only way to be successful in this capitalistic society was to be one of the lucky people who LOVED what they did. Then we (the lucky ones) didn't "work." We beat the system at its own game.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But instead of 'never' working a day in my life, I worked every day of my life.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

And I trained my brain to think of anything I loved as a form of money.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I monetized all my hobbies and thought of everything as a side hustle.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I said yes to every project because hey, I loved it, so it wasn't working, right?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I felt guilty for taking breaks because why would you need a break from something you love?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Don't get me wrong, even with this new revelation I know how privileged it is to even be afforded the time and opportunity to question my relationship with work.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
That being said, I know it's not healthy, It's not sustainable, and it's not what life is about.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

You are so much more than your Linkedin Title.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

You are more than your to-do list.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Tik Tok could be banned?!?!? 😱⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I could dive into how Tik Tok just released a transparency report (😃) or how Amazon sent out an email urging employees to remove the ban then retracted their statement. (🤔)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And while those are interesting and so is following this issue from the inside of Tik Tok and the outside as a marketer, it's not what I care to focus on.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What I want to focus on is the idea that social media is rented real estate.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What does this mean?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We don't OWN Instagram. Nor do we OWN Twitter. Or Tik Tok. Or Facebook.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
That means (*no matter how unlikely) at any point for any reason these apps can disappear, be irrelevant, or even get banned.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
*I find this to be unlikely because in Capitalism money rules all and these apps make A LOT of money.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What's important to remember are these 2 things:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1. You CAN own things in relation to your audience. You can own an email list. You can own a phone number list. Those are things you can carry on with you. Even more so you OWN your brand. Your people, if nurtured, will follow you to the depths of Myspace and back.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
More importantly...⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2. In a world where it is commonplace to get [insta]nt validation from strangers on the internet - try to create happiness and comfortability for and from yourself.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I love social media. I love creating. I love connecting, And I'd be a huge liar if I didn't say I too get a boost of Serotonin when I see that little heart notification on my screen.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

But we DON'T need it to be happy. Or to be valid. Or to have something important to say. Those exist within us all the time.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I'm sorry, but I lied to you all. Followers DO matter. 👀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I always preach not to care about follower count but here is the truth.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If follower count meant "nothing", Instagram would give every user the "swipe up" feature.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
They wouldn't hold out for 10K followers.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The reality is Instagram WANTS you to strive for something.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Because they want to sell you Ads and Boosted Posts. 😱⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If follower count didn't matter than Influencer Partnerships wouldn't exist.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Brands would have just kept sending products to celebrities.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But followers do MEAN something. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What I mean when I say "don't care about follower count" is don't allow the number to heavily influence your decisions on social.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Don't feel like what you have to say matters LESS because you "only" have 500 followers.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Don't feel like you're "too big" to reply to your comments because you have 10,000 followers.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We tend to tie our actions and our worth to the number but forget the number is based on REAL people. (Mostly 🤖)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Your followers matter even when there's only 5 of them.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I promise you when you humanize the number on your profile picture you'll find way more peace.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

With that peace and gratitude you'll be able to keep creating without feeling discouraged.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Here's mine: I was once at a point where how I appeared to be online was more important that how I actually was.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I was hurting so bad I would rather exist as my online persona than in my own feelings.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

The REAL reason why I pivoted my business to coaching...⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I fundamentally believe small business owners who take social media into their own hands will have a leg up on their competition.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

My philosophy on social media for solopreneurs is that THEY are the magic behind the brand.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

As much as they can be, they SHOULD be on their own social feeds.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
