Thank you to everyone who joined ICLEI USA’s recent webinar, ClearPath 2.0 in Practice: The Elk Grove Climate Compass. For those who weren’t able to attend—or who would like to revisit the discussion—the full recording is now available.

In this session, the City of Elk Grove, ClimateView, and Ascent share how ClearPath 2.0 was used to support the Elk Grove’s Climate Compass, offering a practical look at how climate action plans can become more interactive, trackable, and accessible.

In 1982, Los Angeles County adopted the Oak Tree Permit (OTP) Ordinance, establishing one of California’s first comprehensive protected tree regulations and a model for municipalities across the state. Now, the Los Angeles County Planning Department is updating the OTP Ordinance to streamline permitting, improve mitigation standards, and encourage early project planning with the goals of minimizing impacts to protected oaks and expediting the permitting process. A draft updated ordinance is expected to be released for public review in 2026.

As one of California's most influential protected tree frameworks, this update has implications well beyond Los Angeles County. Read the full article for more details on the proposed changes and resources to help you stay informed as the update moves forward: ascent.inc/protected-tree-permits

ICLEI USA, ClimateView, the City of Elk Grove, and Ascent are hosting a free webinar that takes a practical look at how ClearPath 2.0 is being used to bring Elk Grove’s Climate Compass to life. The City of Elk Grove is the first California jurisdiction to implement ClearPath 2.0 in support of a new climate action plan. This session draws directly from that implementation experience, including the choices made during setup, what required iteration, and how the platform was adapted to serve staff, decision-makers, and the public alike.

The TOGETHER Bay Area Conference kicks off today, and we're excited that Lara Rachowicz, PhD, and Greta Brownlow, PhD, are representing Ascent at tomorrow's in-person gathering at Fort Mason in San Francisco.

This year's theme, Pace, Scale, and Durability, speaks directly to the work our natural resources and ecological planning teams do every day: navigating the tension between urgency and long-term resilience, and building the partnerships that make lasting progress possible.

If you're attending, say hello to Lara and Greta! And if you're not, the conference is sold out for good reason. It's one of the best regional gatherings for practitioners and professionals working on climate resilience, conservation, and healthy lands and communities across the Bay Area.

Congratulations to the Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority on breaking ground at Coyote Valley Open Space Preserve. This is such a meaningful milestone. Improving trails, adding accessible features, and creating more inclusive spaces so people of all abilities can experience the benefits of open space. And it's just the beginning, with a longer-term vision for ecological restoration and wildlife habitat enhancement ahead.

We're grateful to have contributed to the environmental planning that helped get this project here. So exciting to see it go from plans to shovels in the ground!

We’re very proud and happy to congratulate Ascent CEO Gary Jakobs, AICP, on receiving the Al Reynolds Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association of Environmental Professionals (AEP) at the AEP State Conference on April 24th in San Diego. His decades of leadership, service to the environmental field, and support of AEP have made lasting impacts. This includes Curriculum Director of the annual statewide AEP Advanced CEQA Workshops for 16 years and co-founder of the annual Environmental, Engineering, Planning Internship and Charrette (EEPIC), a program that provides help to college students seeking an early career opportunity. Ever the St. Louis Cardinals’ fan, the award ceremony audience had a “Career Grand Slam” baseball-style pennant to wave (the pennant’s graphic is here, shown in Cardinals colors, of course). Two members of Gary’s family, Kelley Taber and Nate Jakobs, joined him for the celebration, seen here at dinner after the award event. The award is well-deserved recognition of the difference Gary has made. Congratulations!
