For artists who want to get 1 million legitimate views on a video, here’s how much it would cost and how you can avoid paying that.

Personally, I wouldn’t recommend spending money on ad campaigns to reach 1 million views, but here’s roughly how much it would cost and shows the monetary value of going viral.

Before you leave angry comments saying views aren’t the same thing as impressions, in general, you’d be correct but this is only meant to be a way to roughly estimate the cost for 1 million views.

We promoted the album for an entire year by making short form videos that didn’t cost much. There was only one “official” music video, and the rest were performance based videos we shot with my iPhone 16 Pro in different locations. We did videos for almost every song on the album with multiple videos going viral.

You don’t just make one post to announce your new album is out and move on. Albums usually cost a lot of money to make so you wanna make sure you get the most out of every song. You do this by investing just as much time and money into promoting it. The beauty of social media is that you can do just that with minimal cost, but yet still be highly effective.

Now our success wasn’t only because of the videos and how we marketed it. The most important part was that the music was “good.” That’s the key. Cool visuals and attention grabbing hooks are great, but if the music doesn’t resonate with people, you’re not getting far in your career no matter how good your videos are.

Over a span of a year with experimenting with short form performance videos, I grew Lyrics Born’s following from 20k to 200k+ on IG and 1.5k to 58k+ on TikTok. Our most viral videos didn’t take off until 6 months into our album promotion, after Snoop reposted the video for the first single.

I’ve heard every reason why artists don’t want to use social media or create content to promote their music. Yes, there are other options and routes you can take. But love it or hate it, social media is the powerful and scalable tool to market and promote your music. That’s just where technology has taken us.

It’s important to remember that content has always existed even before the Internet and social media. It has always been an important component of marketing music. Except, back in the days the artist would typically participate in the creation of content, or they would have the label handle and facilitate the content, i.e. music videos or radio/magazine interviews, so that the artist didn’t have to handle it.

But most artists today aren’t signed to a label so it’s expected that the artist need to do themselves or pay someone to do it. This necessity of content for promotion wasn’t created by social media, it only increased it and saturated it exponentially.

Marketing your music isn’t easy, but there is a path forward, for new and veteran artists, if you’re willing to experiment and be consistent with content.

Social media is the new email??

It sounded cooler and smarter when I first thought of it 😅 BUT the main point is… Yes, music artists work with audio and video, but when it comes to marketing, your text game on social media is just as important.

The problem with IG Instants for music marketing…

The new feature “Instants” can have some use as a marketing tool for artists. You can tease products or releases. You can share raw, In the moment photos behind the scenes. You can do a flash sale and share a coupon code. BUT there’s one major issue, and we also see it with Notes.

To me, the better features or tools from Instagram artist should focus on are Edits and Broadcast channel.

I was surprised to learn this. If you’ve had your music go viral, have you noticed this as well?

Can independent artists survive without their music on Spotify? Here’s what you need to know if you’re deciding to take your music off of Spotify.

Many artists have become frustrated with Spotify over the years and some have even removed their music from the platform. It’s a big decision that can have a big impact on your business and career.

Here’s my list of the top things you lose out on if you decide to pull the plug on Spotify.

If you want to move forward with this decision, read the full blog on my website d4musicmarketing.com (link in bio) for next steps.

Offering a free digital download of your album is a common tactic to get people to buy physical copies of your music. With streaming royalty payouts so low, it makes sense that artists try and get fans to buy as much of their music on physical formats.

Inspired by the Chance the Rapper NFC chip tapping video I did, I wanted to review what are the different options that independent artists have to facilitate this.

Please Note: The NFC chip technology referenced in the video is specifically about the company Chance the Rapper used for his CD, IYK.app. There are other companies that do something similar for artists using NFC chips, but it may not work the same way.
