California’s New Law Effective January 1, 2027 Governs Attorney Use of AI. The law essentially calls for attorneys to protect confidential client information and to personally verify the integrity of the work generated or augmented by AI.
In California, this means firms must set policies and guidelines to ensure sensitive client data doesn’t leak into unapproved or unvetted AI tools, and attorneys cannot delegate work entirely to AI without verification nor can they task paralegals or other staff with that responsibility.
AI isn’t a future consideration. It’s now. As mentioned in our last newsletter, we are once again turning the ship straight into these new waters and we are prepared to help guide you through this new territory. We give a presentation for Sacramento Valley of Legal Administrators on Wednesday October 21, we plan two more public presentations later this year and have already started scheduling presentation in our client offices, with the first one coming in early November.
Please reach out if you’re interested in a free assessment of the AI tools already utilized in your firm, advice or direction on implementing policies and guidelines, and selecting and standardizing on appropriate tools for your firm.
