Two reports dropped this week, and they say the same thing.

APPA's 2026 Cat Report: 53 million U.S. households now own a cat, and homes with 3+ cats are up 45% since 2018. CNBC: General Mills, Chewy, and Petco all told investors that cat products are the bright spot while dog demand softens.

Here's the part nobody's talking about: most pet sitting is still built for dogs. Cat parents want someone who actually understands cats. That's the business we franchise.

Last week, a local morning show ran a segment on cats and mental health. Somewhere along the way, it turned into a bit about why the hosts don't like cats.

The segment was extremely irresponsible. Here's what was happening in the same news cycle:

In Palm Beach County, the Sheriff's Office is searching for a man believed to be responsible for shooting multiple community cats. One survivor, Zoe, lost a leg. Furry Friends Humane has put up a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.

And with Halloween a few weeks away, shelters are issuing their annual reminders: keep cats indoors, keep them away from the door on trick-or-treat night, and speak up when something doesn't look right.

Cats are family to millions of people. They deserve to be talked about that way.

That's why MEOW! exists. A cats-only brand isn't a marketing niche to us. It's a commitment to treating cats with the love and care they deserve.

We got very excited to see this.

Smalls, a cats-only food brand, just launched a campaign called "Is Cat." Picture a dirty martini with two words underneath: "Is cat." That's it. And it's one of the smartest things we've seen from a pet company in a long time, because anyone who lives with a cat gets it instantly. Cats as the main event. What's not to love?

It is so refreshing to see another cats-first business. MEOW! was built for cats only, too. We started a cats exclusive pet sitting company, and now a franchise, around a simple belief: cats deserve their own lane. Not a corner of the dog aisle. Their own lane.

So from one cats-only company to another: well done, Smalls. More of this.

(No partnership here — just admiration for people who get it.)

Cats outpaced dogs in 2025 shelter adoptions. Cat adoptions were 2.2 million and dogs were 2 million.

Fifteen years ago that would have sounded like a typo. So much has changed, and it's genuinely exciting for us.

The more interesting detail is who's doing the adopting — and what it means for how cat care gets delivered. Read the full post here: https://meowfranchising.com/cats-are-coming-home-and-we-are-here-to-take-care-of-them/

When I founded MEOW!, I knew there was a need for a pet sitting company built only for cats. After more than 25 years in pet care, I'd seen firsthand how often cats get treated as an afterthought.

Recently I was digging through industry numbers when one statistic stopped me in my tracks.

53 million American households share their home with a cat. Yet cats account for only about 6% of professional pet sitting revenue.
That number didn't just surprise me. It confirmed everything I'd watched happen across my entire career.

Millions of families adore their cats, and almost no one has built a pet care business around what cats actually need.
That gap is exactly why MEOW! exists. We're proud to be part of a movement putting cats first and raising the standard of feline care.

Next month, our sister location, MEOW! At the Lake turns five.

That milestone belongs to Michele and to the cat parents of Lake Monticello who trusted her with their feline family and their homes. But it matters to anyone considering a MEOW! of their own, because Lake Monticello is not Tampa Bay. It is a lakeside community in Fluvanna County, Virginia — the kind of market a national franchise brand would scroll right past on a demographic map.

Five years later, it is still going strong! Still cats only. Read the full blog in the comments section below.

Last weekend I went to my local pet store for something completely ordinary — a topical treatment for my cat. I walked the whole store twice and couldn't find it. Finally gave up and asked the woman at the register, and she pointed me to the dog section. Not because it was a product for both animals. It was a cat product. It just lived in the dog aisle because that's where the shelf space happened to be.

I found what I needed. But before I left, I stood there for a minute and actually looked around — really looked, which I'm not sure I'd ever done before. Aisle after aisle of dog food. Dog toys, dog beds, dog crates, dog treats, dog shampoo. Dog everything.

Cats got a stretch of wall.

I don't think the industry ignored cats out of malice. I think it built for the customer in front of it and never revisited the assumption.
