Wishes vs. Dreams
We are constantly hearing people tear down the dreams of others who have the courage to speak those dreams. These are not cruel people trying to hurt the "dreamer"; they are frequently loved ones trying to protect the one they love from "getting hurt" or "being taken advantage of", etc.
But those who make those comments are uninformed about the true power of a dream and confuse it with the mere desire or a wish.
So what separates a dream from a wish? When most people want something, they have a desire to be a better person, own a new car, take a special vacation, or something else that is within their budget, they merely buy it and that satisfies the desire. So a wish is wanting something that one can easily attain without much effort. Another type of wish is something that one would want to have or be in the future but does not currently have the means to make it a reality. They know that the wish is possible but are not willing to do the things that are necessary to fulfill that desire. So when people tell you that your dreams are just fantasies that never come true they are talking about the experiences that they have experienced or heard about from others who wished for something and never was able to bring it to reality.
The key to remember here is that we are all products of the information we allow to enter our subconscious minds. If we always read stories about the failures people experience in their lives (the news, for example), if we always associate and share stories with people who have never experienced the culmination of seeing a dream through to completion, it is not surprising that these same people cannot "see" how a dream can possibly come true. We are a product of our environment. A fish lives in water so the whole world to a fish is that it is made up of only water. Our perspective is built upon the information we obtain from what we read, what we hear, who we listen to and who we associate with.
A dream is when a wish becomes a vision of what is possible. It is no longer just a wish, but becomes a burning desire to obtain the goal. So how does a dream become a reality? Again through association, reading and listening. How do I know? Because I have seen both sides of this equation. I have been around people who have no real ambition in life other than just going through the daily motions of life. Watching TV, spending money on credit and never having what they really want in life. And I have been around people who have made changes to the information they put in their brains. They read books about successful people, they get around people who are fighting the same battles with the process of improving their lives and improving the chances of success. These people are willing to make sacrifices to achieve their goals when everyone around them tells them they are crazy for trying to pursue their dreams.
Of the two groups mentioned above, I have found that one never achieves their wants and wishes if it requires that they get uncomfortable. The second group, when they stick with their dreams, and continue to work toward their goals, when the road to success requires detours and yet they find a way to get around the roadblocks, when they listen and associate with people who have already achieved many big goals in life an follow their lead, when they hang around people who are going through the same struggles and yet encourage each other, then they often find that their dreams also come true.
Be a BIG dreamer. Follow the dreamers who have the type of success you are looking to achieve, then keep at it until your dream is a reality. Don't listen to anyone who says your dream won't come true. Don't listen to those who tell you that you have tried this many times before and never made it work. Don't listen to the excuses that others have for why it won't work. Instead read about those who made it work, listen to the men and women who, in spite of their fears and doubts, achieved their dreams, and continue to associate with people who encourage and mentor.
