After the pandemic forced offices to close, millions of people converted homes and apartments into workspaces and helped keep their companies afloat. Many want to continue working remotely, and employers have talked about adopting hybrid models.

Here’s an exercise for you: Try to imagine yourself with two heads instead of one. Or, if that’s too daunting, picture what your house would look like if it had a turret and a drawbridge.

Okay, now pause for a moment. As you visualized these things, did your eyes move to the right? Odds are that they did.

Why is that?

Look right for creativity

Many mental operations are connected to specific eye movements. When your brain has to visualize something new – like a two-headed you or your house-turned-castle – your eyes usually look to the right.

The great thing is, you can use this to your advantage. Next time you’re at a brainstorming meeting with a blank whiteboard staring back at you, try moving your eyes to the right. It may seem strange, but research has shown that this simple trick can help your brain tap into the areas associated with creativity and novel ideas. ~ Unlimited Power, by Tony Robbins.

Take a moment to think about one of your goals. It could be anything – from a professional aspiration to a dietary resolution.

Got it? Okay, now jot it down.

Did you write something like “Stop eating junk,” or was it more like “Make healthy, delicious meals for myself”?

The former formulation is an avoidance goal; the latter, in contrast, is an approach goal.

Create approach goals for feel-good productivity

As you probably guessed, approach goals – aiming for something positive rather than steering clear of something negative – make us feel better and are more effective at ushering us to actual goal achievement.

One 1997 study found that students who used approach goals improved their performance, while the opposite was true for students using avoidance goals.

So why not take a couple of goals you already have and reframe them? Because not only does “Deliver a presentation that I’m proud of” sound a lot more appealing than “Don’t screw up my next presentation,” it literally gives you a better chance of achievement.

Happy Monday,

Is your to-do list depressingly long, clogged up with all manner of minor tasks to the point where you can’t really tell what’s important or urgent anymore?

Enter productivity guru David Allen’s famous two-minute rule:

A task of two minutes or less? Get it done, don’t digress!

Whenever you come across a task that can be done in under two minutes, for example, responding to an email or sending a meeting invite, jump on it immediately. Don’t plan, don’t put it on your to-do list, don’t look for a time slot when you could do it, JUST DO IT.

Completing such short tasks actually takes less time than planning when and how to complete them, so get them out of the way then and there. Adhere to the two-minute rule, and you’ll find your to-do list growing mercifully shorter and less stress-inducing. ~ Tips For Stress-Free Productivity by David Allen.

Hey there,

It’s 9:00 p.m. and you’re working late on a project. You find yourself facing an all-too-familiar dilemma: work for a couple more hours or get to bed and start afresh tomorrow.

What do you do? Surely squeezing in some extra work tonight will help you get on top of things, right?

Not really.

You snooze, you win

Sleep is more than an eight-hour slack-off period where you dream of bizarre situations like showing up naked to your twenty-first birthday party.

When you sleep, you integrate the information you collected during the day and, believe it or not, you problem-solve.

In one study, researchers found that students were better able to solve a problem following a good night’s sleep than by working on it through the night. In fact, you’re twice as likely to solve a problem after sleeping.

Companies, too, are starting to recognize the necessity of adequate rest. Microsoft has taken a step in the right direction by installing an in-house spa for rest and relaxation. And, since decreased work hours have been shown to increase productivity, opportunities for down time, such as using an in-house spa, seem to be a key factor in doing just that.

So now you know what to do when you’re tempted to burn the midnight oil: close your laptop and go to bed. You might just wake up to find that whatever you were working on has worked itself out in the night. ~ The Organized Mind, by Daniel Levitin.

Hey there,

Think fast: A bat and ball cost $1.10, and the bat costs one dollar more than the ball. How much does the ball cost?

Did you think the answer was $0.10?

If you take a second and do the math, you’ll see that the correct answer is $0.05. But don’t feel bad – almost everyone makes this mistake at first!

We are of two minds, each useful for different things

In his book Thinking Fast and Slow, Nobel Prize-winner Daniel Kahneman explores the two thinking systems that we use to make decisions: the fast, intuitive and unconscious system one and the slow, rational, consciously controlled system two. The first excels at quick actions, like reacting to car horns in traffic, whereas the second is used for complex reasoning tasks like math problems.

When one system is used for something that the other should handle, interesting things happen. For instance, when people first hear the bat-and-ball problem, system one jumps in and gives the apparently obvious answer based on intuition. But in fact the problem is a little more complex than it seems at first glance, which is why the correct solution requires system two.

Instant productivity: The Pomodoro Technique

Do you struggle with procrastination? Have trouble maintaining focus? Check your emails every five minutes? The Pomodoro Technique might just be right for you!

This simple productivity method works by dicing up your workday into 25-minute chunks of totally focused work called pomodoros, separated by five-minute breaks.

If you’re curious about the name, “pomodoro” is Italian for “tomato” and the Italian founder of the technique used the popular tomato-shaped kitchen timer to time his work!

The idea is that, while you may struggle to focus for long periods, a measly 25 minutes is almost always doable, and the mandatory five-minute breaks ensure you’re refreshed enough to tackle the next pomodoro. The end result is that you get much more done during your workday.

So what are you waiting for? Pick a task, set a timer for 25 minutes and give it a go! ~ The Pomodoro Technique by Francesco Cirillo.
