WHY IS PROCESS IMPORTANT?

So many things are important elements to running an organization, managing a project, and implementing an initiative. Things like a solid strategy, capable people, and more. At Kaleidoscope we recognize we have a mantra, "If you can't describe it, you can't manage it, and if you can't manage it, you can't improve or innovate it". Process is a series of knowable and planned actions or steps taken in order to achieve a particular end. Process is important to those who lead and those who manage because:

- Processes drives confidence
- Process creates transparency
- Processes brings consistency
- Processes helps with monitoring and audits
- Processes makes outcomes predictable
- Process makes coordination easier
- Processes help improve employee and constituent satisfaction
- Process drives accountability
... and so much more!

IS LEADING MANAGING?

In our years of consulting, we have encountered organizations with strong leadership and weak management, weak leadership and strong management. And we have worked with organizations were both or neither were present.

But it is important to remember, leading and managing are not the same, although they are related and can overlap.

Leadership is about inspiring and motivating people to achieve a shared vision, while management focuses on the processes and resources needed to accomplish specific goals. A leader influences and inspires, while a manager directs and controls.

A healthy and successful organization needs both!

For-profits are more successful when there is strong leadership and management to meet their profit motive.

Similarly, non-profit organizations are more successful when there is strong leadership and management to meet their mission.

In this McKinsey Explainers, we answer the age-old question “what is leadership” and explore the different styles and strategies to become a better leader.

WHAT IS A LEADER?
According to Josée Larocque Patton, a Forbes Councils Member, leaders are servants to others and that means we don’t need one specific definition of what a leader is. We are all leaders in our own way. Anyone can be a role model, anyone can help people achieve a goal and anyone can set someone else up for success. When someone is a leader, it's not about their words, it's their actions that make them leaders.

Read more about what he thinks about leaders.

Leaders are servants to others and that means we don’t need one specific definition of what a leader is.

HOW LEADERS CAN ADDRESS VIOLENCE AT WORK

At Kaleidoscope, we look at the many challenges leaders face.

In the U.S., crime has generally been decreasing, particularly violent crime, since 2020.

Yet, according to Prescot HR, "a staggering 1.3 million nonfatal violent crimes are committed in the workplace every year, according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). This can encompass a disturbing range of acts, from verbal threats and intimidation to physical assaults. Workplace violence not only inflicts physical and emotional harm on employees but also disrupts productivity and creates a climate of fear."

Read what they recommend for leaders who's profit and mission motive can be challenged by this growing trends.

We should all play our part in workplace violence prevention efforts. But leadership has a special role that shouldn't be overlooked.

LEADING CHANGE MEANS LOOKING FOR DEEP SYSTEMIC FORCES

Most change management has shifted from a simplistic, top-down, “create a vision, change the structure, roll out the new program, and get buy-in” approach to more emergent, empowered, and purpose-led approaches. But leading big, complex change is still a struggle — the rate of failure for transformation projects remains stubbornly high. T

he authors have seen both in their research and their work with clients that the missing ingredient is the ability to look for and work with deeper systemic forces. And they found the force that has the greatest impact on change outcomes is humans’ primary need to belong. The authors present four strategies for leaders to skillfully attend to people’s most primal need to feel secure in disruptive contexts.
