This past week, I had the incredible opportunity to join Jason Hawes and his team for an investigation at the historic (and famously active) old St. John’s County Jail. It was an honor to not only share a few experiences from the location but also to help aid the team in designing a strategic game plan for the investigation. Walking those halls alongside someone who has dedicated decades to the field was a truly unforgettable experience.
For those who may not know, Jason Hawes (born December 27, 1971) is best known as the co-founder of The Atlantic Paranormal Society (TAPS) and a longtime leading figure in paranormal television. He rose to prominence as a star and co-producer of Syfy's Ghost Hunters, which ran for eleven seasons before concluding its initial run in 2016. After the show's revival on A&E in 2019, Jason embarked on a new chapter, stepping away to lead his own team alongside Ghost Hunters alumni Steve Gonsalves and Dave Tango in Travel Channel's Ghost Nation. While that series concluded in 2021, it marked an important period of creative independence for Jason, allowing him to continue investigating on his own terms.
Interestingly, the St. John’s County Jail had been stirred up just prior to Jason's arrival. I had been investigating the previous week at the Old Jail with the Hit Squad of Boos Brews and BBQ as they wrapped up their 10th episode with some heart pounding moments as the energy was anything but quiet! The Boos, Brews and BBQs team's investigation had truly chummed the spiritual waters, leaving the location buzzing with activity. When Jason came in a week later, he stepped into that heightened environment and discovered some incredibly interesting activity of his own—further proving that sometimes the groundwork laid by one team sets the stage for something even more compelling.
Today, Jason remains deeply active in the field—pursuing independent investigations, collaborating with fellow researchers, and continuing the mission he helped build decades ago: bringing credibility, compassion, and methodical research to paranormal investigation. Being able to work alongside him on this investigation was a reminder of why his approach has resonated with so many for so long.
Looking forward to sharing more from our time at the St. John's County Jail. Stay tuned.
