HR really is the architect of sustainable leadership through the systems and processes designed to shape human behavior What do you think?

After 4 decades as a Human Resources professional, I understand our reputation – “HR work,” “administrativia,” “compliance,” “rules.” I even saw a LinkedIn post recently that carried the well-worn story of an HR professional walking into a department, only to hear, “Who’s in tr...

How comfortable do you feel in a room full of extraverts? Moi? Well, I'm an introvert (sort of) so not real comfortable. Here's my recent story.

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you just didn’t fit? There are lots of reasons that might be. You could be a lone female in a room of males discussing football (actually, I’d love that if the topic were Nebraska Cornhuskers). You could be an African American in a room full of.....

"So often I find leaders taking the first step and setting expectations, then sitting back and watching for the magic to happen. It usually doesn’t."

One of my favorite statements, when speaking to a group of executives, is: Few people come to work with the intention of screwing up. Transparency in organizations....is it important? Does it exist?

Organizations and organizational leaders tout transparency but in my experience, they are reluctant to be fully transparent. One client I had “got” how important transparency is in the hiring process. They were looking for a nurse to work a particularly difficult shift caring for unruly patients...

Leadership 101 (Redux) Leadership today is wobbly. We seem to rationalize behaviors that fly in the face of sound leadership far too easily.

Congratulations to and Dennis J. Pitocco on this well-deserved award. Dennis has given me a voice and a way to make sense of things in my own mind by writing and I am grateful.

No one can whistle a symphony. It takes a whole orchestra to play it. ~H.E. Luccock As you may well know, a symphony is a composition of diverse elements that must include the ensemble of an orchestra. Orchestras are usually led by a conductor who directs the performance with movements of the hands....

Thoughts on where SHRM is heading - feedback welcome

Like many of you, I recently received a letter from Johnny C. Taylor, the president and CEO of SHRM. He announced that the organization will take “a definitive and significant course of action: to convene the best minds to drive actions and solutions around equity in the workplace for the Black co...

Lessons can be learned almost anywhere. While attending a comic convention in Orlando, there were six business lessons learned. Who knew?

Having spent 40 years in the field of Human Resources, I realize that I have a perspective that others don't so I thought I would share my own experience, and where that experience has brought me, today.

The year was 1994, seventeen years after the Community Reinvestment Act of 1977 was signed into law. “The Community Reinvestment Act is a United States federal law designed to encourage commercial banks and savings associations to help meet the needs of borrowers in all segments of their communities, including low- and moderate-income neighborhoods.” I was in my second civilian job after I left the Marine Corps, working in the Human Resources Department of a large mid-Atlantic bank. Leadership in Tough Times – the Rest of the Story

In early April I wrote about a popular and upscale waterfront restaurant, and the leadership qualities I have seen since we’ve lived around the corner. They weathered Hurricanes Matthew and Irma an…

It was 2008. My colleagues and I were cleaning out our offices preparing to be unemployed because of our organization’s bankruptcy. Given that, we threw caution to the wind and talked about politics. I was a different person then. I had strong opinions formed over a lifetime by those around me who shared the same thoughts. My colleague, in discussing the upcoming election, said that the global community distrusts and dislikes the United States. [ 818 more words ]
