When it comes to leather, waterproof and water resistant aren’t the same.

✽ Waterproof leather is specially treated or finished so water cannot pe*****te the material at all.
✽ Water resistant leather can repel some moisture, but prolonged exposure can still cause stains, warping, or damage.

Understanding the difference helps you choose the right leather for your project—whether you’re making bags, belts, or outdoor gear. Proper care and finishing can also improve water resistance and prolong the life of your leather items.

Leather 101 Workshop Wednesday: Leather – Measured by the Square Foot, Not the Yard

Unlike fabric, leather isn’t sold by the yard. Because it’s a natural material, each hide is unique, with uneven edges and varying sizes depending on the animal it came from. That’s why leather is measured and sold by square foot.

This method ensures that all usable areas of the hide are accounted for. Large-scale tanneries even use laser scanners to measure hides accurately, considering factors like holes, rough patches, and imperfections. This gives crafters the most reliable square footage for their projects.
