Why has PVC been the go-to material for plastic cards for decades?

PVC stands for polyvinyl chloride. It is lightweight, durable, easy to print on and flexible enough to handle years of use in a wallet.

Recycled PVC, often called rPVC, keeps many of those practical qualities while reducing the need for newly produced plastic. It is a practical option since it can work with existing printing and lamination processes while still meeting card performance standards.

Other materials, including recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and bio-based plastics, are also being explored. Whatever the material, the goal remains the same: produce a card that looks right, works reliably and lasts as long as it is needed.

The magnetic stripe is not disappearing tomorrow, but it is becoming less important. For decades, it gave businesses a simple way to read card information at checkout. The drawback is that it holds static data, which can be copied more easily than information stored on a chip. Chip transactions create a unique code for each purchase, making counterfeit card fraud more difficult.

With chip readers and contactless payments now widely used, fewer purchases depend on the stripe. Beginning in 2027, Mastercard will no longer require it on newly issued U.S. cards. You will still find magnetic stripes on some payment, gift, loyalty and access cards for years to come, but swiping is gradually giving way to inserting and tapping.
