According to our friends Cox Automotive Inc. new vehicle inventory rose to 2.8m units in September, lifting supply from 75 to 82 days. The averages hide a significant divide -- vehicles priced at $30,000 or less had 63 days supply while vehicles priced above $80,000 averaged nearly double the lot time (111 days).

New-vehicle prices are near a record high.

Kelley Blue Book’s October 13 report puts September’s average new-vehicle transaction price at $50,562—just $52 below the record high. Prices rose for a fourth consecutive month, even as buyers shifted toward more affordable vehicles. Average incentives were also lower than a year earlier. Cox Automotive Inc.

Make affordability part of the conversation early. Ask about the customer’s budget, trade-in and flexibility on vehicle choice. Record those answers in the CRM so the next conversation builds on what you learned. When the original vehicle stretches the budget, offer a relevant alternative and a clear next step.

Did you know a tragic accident on this day in 1908 changed cars forever? 🚗

Before electric starters, drivers had to start engines using a heavy physical hand crank. On September 21, 1908, automotive pioneer Byron Carter stopped to help a stranded motorist crank her stalled Cadillac.The engine backfired, causing the heavy metal crank to spin violently backward. It struck Carter, fracturing his jaw and ultimately leading to his untimely death from complications.

Devastated by the loss of his close friend, Cadillac founder Henry Leland vowed to eliminate the danger of hand-cranking. He commissioned the invention of the electric self-starter, which Cadillac debuted just a few years later in 1912—saving countless lives and making driving accessible to everyone.
