On this National Automotive Industry Day, I celebrate the ideas that keep finding bigger roads.
The Indianapolis Motor Speedway was first proposed as a private testing ground because early public roads gave manufacturers few places to safely test vehicle speed and performance.
It later became home to the first Indianapolis 500 in 1911. What began as a practical industry need grew into one of motorsports’ greatest traditions.
