When Will Gift Inflation Start?

Everything costs more. Prices seem to go up every week. Running your non-profit costs more than ever before, even as you cut expenses to the bone.

So, when are your contributors' gifts going to start going up to keep pace with inflation, and how the heck can you help them make it happen?
“We always give $100.”

Twenty years ago, a $100 gift was very generous. Three years ago, it was quite generous. This year, not so much. That $100 gift is equivalent to an $83 contribution in 2020. But it feels wrong to ask people for more money when they're struggling too.

Here's an idea:

Do a telemarketing campaign that aims to offset the shortfalls your non-profit is experiencing. Call it the “Inflation Elation” campaign. Callers can ask folks to buy inflation “balloons” for a $50 donation – more than one if they can. Set an optimistic goal and grow your funds while making the point that you can't do the good work you do unless your supporters step up with larger gifts.
