As I returned home from Minneapolis yesterday, I was exhilarated by the tiny acts of kindness. People of all backgrounds were opening doors for each otheras they exchanged greetings and smiles and other acts of kindness.
I really believe that most of want to get along and live in harmony. Nelson Mandella said, “Love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”
Perhaps one of the most impactful and courageous reflections came from high school students from Ukraine who inspired our Roseville Optimist Club with their stories as they prepared to return home to their war-torn country. “You can find like-minded people all over the world. Love is everywhere.”
Resolve to use this holiday season to make love, peace, and harmony the natural order of things. The more we embrace our difference, the more we find our commonality. Happy Thanksgiving.

MINNESOTA STATE HIGH SCHOOL "PREP BOWL"

The Minnesota State High School football “Prep Bowl” was a treat to watch. The players, coaches, and fans exhibited exemplary sportsmanship and class behavior.
What stood out in my mind was the players’ reaction to their good plays. When a receiver caught a pass, even for a touchdown, they handed the ball to the official, celebrated with jubilance but poise with their teammates, and refrained from any call for attention to them personally. No dancing, no pounding their chest, just class and poise. Our hats off to the coaches.
Now if we could only get the NFL to follow the example of our young role models. When former Vikings coach Bud Grant, one of the classiest in the history of the game, was asked about his policy on spiking the ball, he replied, “We don’t have a policy on spiking the ball, we just don’t do it.”

It was an honor to be a part of the Sauk Rapids Middle School “Diggin’ Diversity” talent show rehearsal. Students from across the district come together to present a fantastic variety show that includes singing, dancing, comedy skits, and Broadway tunes that delight the audience.
Advisor James Turner and his students enjoy the comradery, cooperation, and teamwork that carries on the rich tradition of the Sauk Rapids-Rice performing arts programs. Break a BREAK A LEG. (For those not familiar with theatre jargon, “Break a leg” is a wish for good luck.)

It was an honor to speak to the St. Cloud Crush (St. Cloud Tech and St. Cloud Apollo) Girl's Basketball Team. Through the generosity of Liberty Bank Minnesota, each athlete received a copy of ALWAYS BE A CLASS ACT. Coach Desmond Little, his staff, and his athlets are looking forward to a challenging but rewarding season.

St. Cloud State Men's Basketall Coach Quincy Henderson ended their session of Husky Hotshots with such a positive message. Among his instructions to the aspiring young athletes was to have fun and to make sure they gave a hug to their parents, grandparents, or whoever gave them a ride to the pratice.
The St. Cloud State Men's basketball coaches and players live up to their message and their mission to inspire kids to ALWAYS BE A CLASS ACT.

From Deepak Chopra's SEVEN SPIRITUAL LAWS OF SUCCESS.
"Everyone has a purpose in life...a unique gift or talent to give to otheres.
And when [you] blend this unique talent with service to others, [you] experience the ecstacy and exhaultation of [your] own spirit, which is the ultimate goal of all goals."
Replace "What's in it for me?" with "How Can I help?" and see what happens.
From Zig Ziglar's SEE YOU AT THE TOP, "To the extent that you help others get what they want to you receive what you want."

So-called “soft skills” are just that—they’re skills. And like any other skills, they require practice. Mastering patience, self-control and emotional intelligence requires an extreme amount of practice. We don’t often think of these things as skills, but they are. With attention to detail and persistence, they can be learned and honed like any other skill. So the next time somebody is getting under your skin and you feel yourself bristling up, say to yourself, “GEE, THANKS. I HAVE BEEN WORKING ON BECOMING MORE PATIENT AND YOU ARE GIVING ME A WONDERFUL OPPORTUNITY TO PRATICE.
None of this stuff is easy, and mastery doesn’t happen next week, which is why it is so important to engage in a life-long quest for personal growth and self-improvement. Take a few minutes each day to learn and grow and constantly nurture your emotional intelligence. Become your own best coach.

From Chapter 9 WHEREVEER YOU GO - THERE YOU ARE

In my teaching days, if a student wanted to change classes because they didn’t like the teacher, they had to get permission from both teachers before the switch was approved. One teacher, as a student was exiting her class for greener pastures, said, “Remember, you are taking you with you.”
When I was a junior in high school I got kicked out of the band for disruptive behavior. A new teacher came in my senior year, and I was allowed back in the fold. I gave a lot of credit to Mr. Root for providing a fun and rewarding musical experience, but I also know this: I came in with a whole new attitude and a whole new set of behaviors. Had I not changed, had I carried my former self into the new environment, there is a good chance the results may have been duplicated.
We don’t have to approach personal growth and self-improvement from a standpoint of lack. You are already pretty good, but don’t stop now. Zig Ziglar used to say, “I’m good—but I’m getting better.” Approaching everything with that frame of mind makes the journey more rewarding and a whole lot more fun.
Each day, prepare to take the most poised, positive, and enthusiastic you with you wherever you go.
WHEREVER YOU TO -- THERE YOU ARE.
