Today we are talking about dishwashers. Many times I have people talk to me about poor performance from their dishwasher. Some of the complaints I get most often is dishes aren't getting dry, there is a white film on my dishes and it won't come off, and of course the dishes are not getting clean.
There are many reasons why dishes aren't getting dry, other than the heater isn't coming on. First it is important to understand that because of federal mandates to have more energy efficient appliances the heater has been designed to run cooler and a shorter time from that ones that were built 20 plus years ago. to compensate for this you must use a rinse agent in the dishwasher to shed as much water off of the dishes as possible so that the shorter and cooler, not to be confused with cold, dry cycle can actually dry the dishes.

A white film on dishes is usually an indicator that you are rinsing your dishes and using your dishwasher to sanitize your dishes. Although this may sound like a good idea it is not recommended. Too much detergent for the amount of food you have on the dishes will create several bad scenarios. One is that the detergent doesn't break down during the wash cycle and therefore doesn't get flushed out during the rinse cycle and you get detergent redepositing on your dishes. The detergent build up on your dishes can create an excessive amount of suds and that can cause your dishwasher to leak. My recommendation is to remove anything that won't dissolve in water from the dishes before loading. Anything that will dissolve in water leave on the dishes so that the detergent will have something to react with. This will break down the detergent, hold the food residue in suspense long enough to get flushed out of the dishwasher.

Having the proper amount of food residue on the dishes helps the detergent to perform its job. Having too much food that won't dissolve left on the dishes can plug the filter screens and create an environment where dishes won't get clean. At least once a month clean your dishwashers filter screens. There is usually two, a round one that sits inside the sump and a flat one that sits on top of the sump.

When I was a child my parents had a refrigerator with a frost freezer, not to be confused with a frost free refrigerator. For those of you in the under 40 genration let me explain. The part of the refrigerator that creates the cold air is called the evaporator coil, and is ususlly located in the freezer section of refrigerators that are older than 10 years. In refrigerators that are younger than 10 years they may have a split system, which means there is an evaporator coil in both the freezer section and the fresh food section.
However, back to my parents refrigerator. Their refrigerator had an exposed evaporator coil that doubled as the shelves for the freezer. The challenge with this style of freezer is that a person had to thaw the frost every two weeks. If you didn't then your freezer space was reduced by frost. The quick way to remove the frost was to pull out a knife and chip away the frost. Now all of you over 50 years of age are now saying, "DON'T EVER DO THAT", and you'd be right, because if you poke a hole in the evaporator lines you let out all of tbe freon and your refrigerator becomes a warming cabinet. The cist to repair this damage was usually more than a person wanted to spend at that time. The correct way to defrost this kind of evap coil was to turn off the refrigerator, and put a pan of hot water on the shelf, wait 3-5 hours and mop up all the water.

Today this process is done every 24-36 hours automatically by the use of a defrost system which includes a timer, heater, and thermostat. If any of these components burn out, your defrost system stops working, you get build up of frost on the inside back wall of the freeer or fresh food section and you notice that ice cream is getting soft and milk goes bad a few days faster.

If you notice a cooling problem with your refrigerator don't wait, the longer you do the more costly it can be for you. Food loss and long repair times are not a good way to spend money in today's market.

Recently I had received a phone call asking how to clear exsessive suds out of a dishwasher. Apparently someone put Dawn dish detergent in the dishwasher. If you have ever done this you know that your kitchen floor will become a splash pad for the toddlers.

One day, not so long ago I was the misfortunate soul who had a young man come to my house and offer to do my saturday morning dishes if he could watch a movie with us. I found a great way to avoid doing dishes and I didn't have to do them so of course I agreed to the terms and let him do my dishes. This fine young man, lets call him Travis, put dawn detergent in my dishwasher, started the regular cycle and we sat down to watch a movie. Two hours later it was time for snacks. I went to the kitchen and found my own splash pad. I spent 10 minutes trying to clear the suds out of my dishwasher. Each time I would fill, wash, splash, drain, open the door and see 18" of suds still in the dishwasher. After the third attempt I noticed the bacon grease from breakfast still sitting in a pan on the stove. I remembered the Dawn commercials and poured the grease into my dishwasher and started a fourth cycle. Again we had additional water added to our kitchen splash. The soapy water spilled over the dishwasher tub for about 20 seconds and then no more suds.

In short, if you ever find that someone used sink detergent in your dishwasher just add grease and the suds will be gone.

Water doesn’t drain from the dishwasher?

A clog in the drain line is normally the cause. Check for blockage where the dishwasher drain hose attaches to sink drain or garbage disposal. Remove hose and test for blockage. Other causes can be the drain valve, the pump, or even the disposal which should be addressed by a professional repair service….give us a call!

Replace rubber hoses with steel braided fill hoses. These will pay for themselves the first time your hose does not burst! Also take the time to properly balance and load your machine to reduce mechanical wear.

I get a lot of questions about how to get a dishwasher to clean dishes better. Some of the things you can do might seem a little counter intuitive but in fact they work very well. Detergent needs something to react with in order to do it's job. We want detergent to react with food and dirt rather than our dishes. Therefore it is important to leave food residue on your dishes when loading your dishwasher. I know many of you will tell me your dishes don't get clean if you don't rinse your dishes before you load the dishwasher. However, I would suggest that rinsing your dishes will create a bigger problem than you might expect. rinsing your dishes will cause a white film to be created on your dishes that you can't get off. This film is the detergent reacting with your dishes rather than with food. A good rule when loading your dishes is this, if it dissolves in water leave it on the dish, if it doesn't dissolve in water take it off.

Refrigerator coils and maintenance area should be vacuumed every year and the drain hose examined for wear or clogs – you may be able to vacuum the drain hose as well and avoid a clog that could have water leaking both inside the unit and spilling out onto floor. A clogged evaporation drain line is very common on frost free refrigerators. The drain line is typically strapped to the rear of the refrigerator where it empties into a drain pan on the bottom and connects to a drain outlet near the top. Simply disconnect and clean the hose and outlet with a dry vac. A small tool may be needed to loosen a stubborn clog inside the outlet.
