Markel Consulting, LLC Trauma-informed Interview Principles (TiIPs)™
Providing keynote & educational presentations.

Traditional approaches and techniques for interviewing crime victims are not based on understanding how trauma impacts the brain, behavior, and memory. Standard training and habits from interrogating suspects can result in seriously misunderstanding the behaviors, memories and credibility of victims of crime – especially sexual assault victims. Scientists now have a better understanding about why

assault victims may have ‘counterintuitive’ responses such as freezing, spacing out or failing to resist. Plenty of neuroscience research is now available to help explain why victims’ memories can have gaps and some inconsistencies and yet still be very reliable in other, essential respects. Trauma-informed Interview Principles (TiIPs)© provides a cutting-edge perspective and philosophy toward investigating sexual assault, and emphasizes techniques that focus on and utilize a trauma-informed approach, which have been researched refined by experts on the neurobiology of trauma and memory. Attendees of a TiIPs course will learn how to to ask the right kinds of questions, in the right ways. This enables interviewers to better understand victim behaviors and memories that would otherwise be confusing – or may even have been viewed as evidence of a false accusation. The Trauma-informed Interview Principles course enables criminal justice, Title IX investigators, and even HR and corporate executives, to understand how victims and survivors, due to automatic reactions by their brains, actually experienced their assaults and recorded them into memory. Key to effective evidence gathering, this technique reduces the inaccuracy of the information provided by a victim/survivor during an interview and greatly enhances the understanding of the traumatized person’s experience. Persons who attend a Trauma-informed Interview Principles course will learn how to use TiIPs© to ensure that trauma victims/survivors feel safe and understood, to maximize recall, and to enhance the investigative process overall by increasing victim cooperation and participation while reducing potentials for false information and recantation. The Trauma-informed Interview Principles is a highly effective technique for victim, witness and some suspect interviews. This training is fundamental for any professional who interviews, responds to, or interacts with trauma victims/survivors including:

Law Enforcement – Prosecutors – Advocates – Campus Conduct Administrators – SART Members
Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners – Title IX Investigators – Campus Conduct Panels – Teachers - Forensic Interviewers – Mental Health Professionals – Medical Providers - HR personnel - Corporate Exec’s - and more. Contact Dave Markel at 435-632-8843, or email [email protected] for more information.

Rita Smith has been doing this work since before most people were even saying the words 'r**e or sexual assault' out loud. She picked up a crisis line phone in a Colorado shelter back in 1981 and never put it down—she just kept leveling up. Over the years she went from front-line advocate to nearly 22 years as Executive Director of the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, helping shape how this country even thinks about abuse and accountability.

Today, she’s the Senior Advisor to the NFL on domestic violence and sexual assault, and the Executive/VP of External Relations for DomesticShelters.org, still pushing big systems—sports, courts, media, nonprofits—to stop protecting abusers and start centering survivors. (Women’s Media Center)

What I love about Rita is that none of that has turned her into a “talking head.” She can brief the NFL, sit with national media, and still talk like the advocate who answered that first hotline call—plain, direct, and absolutely unwilling to let victims be blamed for the violence done to them. She’s spent four decades making sure survivors aren’t just a footnote in someone else’s PR plan, and I’m honored she said yes to sitting down with me for Episode 164.

In my worldview, there are few things that measure up to the overwhelming power of a tragically groomed and abused woman who overcomes the personal pain, suffering, stigmatization, and oppression that comes from a “controlling, power-crazed narcissist.”(https://www.victoriaellen.co/)
In my interview with Victoria, I found an intense and powerful woman who set her sights on overcoming abuse, reclaiming her voice, and discovering an unshakable strength. At the heart of her journey was her fierce love for her children: a love so boundless that it pushed her to break free from the suffocating grip of a toxic, abusive marriage. Through this, she reclaimed not just her children’s safety but her own agency—her ability to choose her own path. As she peeled back the layers of lies, deceit, and fraud her ex-husband built his life upon, Victoria stepped into a battle she had no idea would be as intense and life-changing as it turned out to be for her and her children--a battle for truth, justice, and dignity.
In this interview, Victoria pulls no punches in revealing the often hidden and devastating realities of domestic abuse, but it also sheds light on the obstacles victims face in a system that is often ill-equipped to support them. Victoria’s resilience was fueled by unwavering faith and determination, and became a force that no setback could stop. Victoria’s interview shows us that her self-reclamation is a testament to her power of persistence. And her book title itself is a beautiful metaphor: even when life pours down its darkest storms, we have the power to create something meaningful, something empowering, out of the mess. Through this episode, Victoria shows us all that resilience, faith, and truth are the ultimate forces of transformation.

Janna’s predator used charm and intermittent affection to erode Janna’s confidence, ultimately gaslighting her into believing she was to blame for his abusive actions. Her story sheds light on the insidious nature of grooming, the psychological toll it takes on survivors, and the critical importance of recognizing warning signs to protect others from similar harm. These are two episodes you'll want to share to help bring justice to victims and survivors of r**e and sexual assault.
