Garden Guru Tips for February 2021
These garden tips are for the lower elevations of Southern Utah specifically designed for Zone 7 and 8a locations. If you live in the higher Zone 6-7 ranges you are almost a month behind this post.
1. Get started on garden planning this month begin the soil prep-work with compost and topsoil mixtures incorporated into your existing flower beds, garden beds, and pots.
2. If you haven’t already ordered your plants select a few good seed catalogs like Burpees, Park Seed and Heirloom Seed.
3. Don’t tidy-up yet! Meaning do not remove frost damaged material until after the last day of frost (around the end of the Month). Even if it is dead, dead branches help shelter and protect the still living branches lower on the plant and the roots from subsequent frost.
4. Even in the dead of winter, plants, which are alive need water. The rain at the end of January may have replenished a long awaited dry-spell but continue to water when the soil is dry below 2 to 3 inches for perennials, and 3 to 4 inches for woody plants. Do take care not to overwater.
5. If it is growing outdoors it doesn’t need fertilizer this month.
6. Apply pre-emergent w**d controls to areas you do not plan to plant to reduce summer w**ding
7. For your deciduous fruits apply a dormant oil to control scale and emerging aphid populations. Use a horticulture or Neem oil on evergreen varieties like citrus.
