MWFPA Joins National Coalition Urging Policymakers to Address Unfair Incentives for Foreign Canned Foods

The Midwest Food Products Association signed onto three coalition letters urging federal policymakers to address the growing impact of imported canned food on U.S. agriculture, manufacturing, and food security. In letters to House and Senate leaders, the coalition called for passage of the American CANS Act to require clear country-of-origin labeling and for stronger “Buy American” requirements in federally funded nutrition programs, emphasizing the need for greater transparency and domestic sourcing. In a separate letter to federal trade officials, the coalition urged the administration to add certain imported canned foods to the Section 232 derivatives list to help level the competitive playing field and reduce cost disparities driven by foreign imports. Across all three letters, MWFPA joined a broad national coalition in advocating for policies that support American farmers, food processors, and manufacturing jobs while strengthening domestic supply chains and food security.

FMI lauds House for passing Farm Bill with SNAP provisions
FMI -- The Food Industry Association has praised the US House for passing a Farm Bill that strengthens the food system, supports farmers and ensures affordable food access. The bill includes bipartisan provisions to make the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program online pilot program permanent and to expand the Gus Schumacher Nutrition Incentive Program. "FMI looks forward to working with policymakers on both sides of the aisle to ensure final enactment of a Farm Bill that meets the needs of the entire food industry and the consumers we serve," said FMI Chief Public Policy Officer Jennifer Hatcher.

University of Wisconsin’s Goldman Explains Why Processed Vegetables are Actually Fresher than “Fresh”
In a recent article for Crop Science, University of Wisconsin Professor Irwin Goldman highlights how processing – especially canning – is central to making vegetables usable, safe, and available, transforming extremely perishable plant tissues into reliable food. Goldman explains that canned vegetables are often processed within hours of harvest at peak ripeness, meaning they can be nutritionally and practically “fresher” than grocery-store produce that may spend weeks in cold storage and transit. Far from being inferior, canning rapidly halts spoilage, preserves flavor and nutrients, and reduces waste while decoupling consumption from the narrow window of harvest. In this way, vegetable processing emerges not as a compromise, but as a critical innovation that sustains food security, quality, and year-round access to vegetables. MORE
